Engine went BOOM!!!
Hey guys,
Well I think my 78 F-250 4x4 is no longer. I put a electric fuel pump on to force feed the mechanical last week. Holy cow made a huge difference, it ran great drove her about 25 miles no problems. Anyway went to go hunting Sat morning hit the ignition and valve cover gasket and bolt went everywhere along with an amazingly loud boom. So in the mean time I am buying a 77 F-150 4x4 tomorrow. So my question is the guy tells me it is a 351 but I think it is a 302. My F-250 has a 400 in it, and I think the 351m looks just like it. So can someone tell me the difference just by looking that this F-150 has a 302 in it. Thanks

Boom
Thanks guys for the quick replies. I am going to pull the valve covers either tomorrow night or sometime this weekend. I will let everyone know what I find. Some more info on what I did. It also has an edelbrock 1405 on a performer intake. That is all the perfromance change. I put in new lifters that came with a stock cam from Napa also new timing chain and gears. Just changed oil last thurs 20w -50 because of low oil pressure and one bottle of Lucas. Original rockers and Valve springs but heads were shaved at local machine shop when head gasket blew. That is all I have done.
The F-150 that I am buying has a 4 speed manual that I am excited about hopefully if it does indeed have a 351 I will swap both into my F-250.

Sounds to me like you may have pushed fuel into the crankcase thru the mechanical pump. The fuel vaporized and fired in the crankcase, which you are lucky you didn't blow off as well. I have never seen this happen but did hear of it and saw a guy with his head gashed open by the oil fill cap on a flat head v8 hitting him as he tryed to start the engine. kotzy
