question for garbz2
hey guys, im another newb here been watching and reading for awhile, great site, great info!!!
hey garbz2, was wondering if you have to cut the frame on a 63 f-100 to install the dakota kit from IC ? also do you have any idea how much it will lower (if any) my 63 using stock dakota parts? ive seen this crossmember and it looks like the way to go if you can locate a donor truck. i just happen to know a guy who has an 87 dakota i mentioned my ordeal and he said to come get what i want all he wants is the cab.....thanks in advance....

Standard drop is 5/6 inches on 4 cylinder coil springs.
Additional drop is available with drop spindles of 2 inches.
and one more inch can be had by removing one turn of the coil spring.
So with stock you can reasonably get around 7 inches of drop on the front end.
With aftermarket spindles you can get 8 to 9 inches. Add in some Z on the frame for some additional drop but raising the cross member limits motors..
The Dakota install comes full welded with the boxing plates installed. All you need to do it trim the rails to slide it in place. Once tacked the hat sections need to be cut out of the frame and the hats slid in place. Once there fitted correctly then full weld everything in. Steve provides a pretty fool proof set of instructions with the basic cross member.
If one is real handy it can be fully installed in a weekend back to a roller.
on an added note, remember adding the cross member dictates a rear sump oil pan so plan accordingly with ford engines.
Above is a shot for the cross member and the rear drop for my Z notch.
And below is the front.

Well I'm ready to change out the front suspension on my 1961 F100 but I am debating on if I should purchase the kit and install myself or set out to find a shop to install. I have all the right tools and have a pretty good mechanical side but am still kinda sketchy about doing this on my own. Who all has done a Mustang II swap on their trucks? and how difficult was it? Also, what companies sell these kits for my year truck, aside from FatMan? Any feedback would be great!
Bottom line is everybody has opinions, and if you ask them theirs is the only way to go,I have used MII (fatmans) on a 65 and a 71 Ford both with great results(using all aftermarket parts-no stamped stock parts),I have a 79 camaro clip on my current 63 uni ,has been installed for 8 years with 50,000 plus miles and works awesome,I have also done C4/C5 corvette crossmembers, pacers, volare etc, etc, etc, they all have strong points and weakness',so do some research ,get the most you can afford and have the tools/skills to install, and most of all dont listen to all the (My way is the best way) opinions, and dont take anyone too serious , just enjoy your truck, doing the way you want.Good Luck with it!
