460 Swap into 77 F-150 complete, or at least running
Thought I'd share this here, it's also in the 460 area.
The original 351M died earlier this year, erroded cylinder block web between 1 and 2 and burnt exhaust valve on 8. Got a 460 off of Craiglist locally and freshened it up with a mild cam upgrade (Comp Xtreme 4x4 X4262H) and other goodies. This past Sunday I got the 460 into the truck! Runs great, love the extra torque and mid-range power is incredible. Wish I had more $ to upgrade the C6, but it seems okay for now.
Below is a pic, everybody loves pics. I'll post more up as I get some more time to take a few more shots and iron things out.
Here's some other info...
Holley Truck Avenger 770
Edlebrock Perform Intake
L&L shorty headers
L&L brackets
AutoFab motor mounts
Lokar kick down
Flowmaster 40 series, duals
Messy wiring (it's on my to-do list)
Truck is registered as a 74, with the 460 in I failed emissions twice (both times on Monday), ended up taking it to a shop and having them tune it with an emissions analyzer, I'm good to go now, passed with flying colors. I hate emissions!
The truck is on 35" MTRs, 4" lift from previous owner, 4.10's, Detroit in the back. Not much to look at but I like it. And if anyone asks, I didn't put that grille on, PO did.
The truck...
I think the distributor is wired in the wrong direction in this pic.
Cool truck, man, nice work. I just picked up a 77 F150 4x4 last week that has a sick 351M in it. I already have a 460/4spd to swap in, since I think the 351 has at least one or two dead cylinders. How do the shorty L&L's fit? How did you route the exhaust after the headers? Do you have any more pics of the exhaust?
Thanks for the kind words. I really enjoy my truck and the new engine makes it fun-er to drive.

The AC compressor is a Sanden unit. I'm using the L&L bracket for the York compressor, but I've also got an adapter bracket from Vintage Air to adapt the Sanden unit to it, the bracket was about $50 I think. I had to machine part of it down to get the compressor to fit due to a two bolts interfering. I've got a vintage air set up. Not working right now, I believe it needs to be vacuumed down and recharged. I had some issues before I swapped the engine.
Here's a link to see what the vintage air adapter bracket looks like, part # 15815-VUB. I've seen these types of brackets on ebay as well.
take care of those "Powered by Ford" valve covers. they're expensive if you gotta replace them. not a bad looking truck. keeping progress on it is the main thing. good luck.

Really? I just picked up a set of early 70's "Powered by Ford" valve covers for my 460, the ones that have the script writing across the whole cover. I bought em at a swap meet for $20 in excellent condition and I thought I paid too much...

Really (or are you just being sarcastic)? I thought they were a dime a dozen. I just used them since I like how they hold the rubber valve cover gaskets and I already had them. Otherwise I would have gone with something aluminum.

Headers fit great. Very easy to install due to the short length/compact size. I went with the shorties to keep the exhaust tucked away. I'm probably not making as much HP as I would with the longer fenderwell exits. I'll get some more pictures when I get a chance this weekend. I've got dual exhaust. The drivers side L&L is angled down and towards the passengers side a bit. So both pipes (2.5") run on the passengers side above the transmission crossmember, then run back going over the axle and straight out the back on either side of a larger aftermarket gas tank. I had this exhaust on the 351M and then I modified it to work with the 460. Originally had a muffler shop install it, and they did a decent job of putting kinks and bends so it stays up. Just wish they were all nice mandral bends - maybe next time.

Cool, sound like exactly what I want to do with mine. Currently the 351M has cheap hedmans which dump below the tranny crossmember. Don't like the look, and I'll probably rip them off in the woods. Trying to keep from going with fenderwells when I do the 460 swap. Sounds like a perfect setup. Where did you get them from?
