New Column Wont Shift
INSTALLING POWER STEERING, on my 66 240 six, found a power steering 3 on column at pull a part, I installed the column now have no 1st or reverse. It appears that the shifter in not connected to the first or reverse shift arms.
I am assuming the steering column I bought from pull a part is broken. are they easily repaired, hope so. I had a hard time finding a 3 on column powersteering column.
thanks

What you are going thru is nothing new, I type the following at least once a week here on FTE.
Look on the bottom of the steering column under the hood at the two manual control selector levers.
These two levers are where the shift rods from the trans attach.
In each of these levers is (supposed to be) one bushing and one insulator.
If those parts are missing, that could be the cause, because you will have too much play in the rods.
C5TZ7343A .. Bushing & Insulator kit / Contains 2 each of the parts / Available from Ford.
MSRP: $16.32 / FTEpartsguy.com price: $11.75.
It's also possible that the 1st-reverse selector lever is bent out of shape.
Since the rods are not the same, did you install the correct rod in the right place?
If you have 2nd-3rd gear, it cannot be caused by anything internally in the column, because if the shift tube was broken, you wouldn't be able to shift...period.
btw: What year did the steering column come from? Some of the later columns have to be cut down in order for everything to work correctly.
The two manual control selector levers only fit certain years (different configurations), so that could be another cause.

Thanks for the info, dont remember what year the pull a part came from, but it has the plastic push on grommets for the transmission shift rods. Here's what I think happened after disassembling the column. One side of the column shift where the two bolts wedge to hold the column flange tight was not caught allowing the shift tube to move up and down as I pulled up to shift to low or reverse. Also ended up using the 66 column flange and steering wheel and wiring from the my old 66 as the PO had cut the wiring when installing a new shift flange and spliced with friction tape ( OLD TERM). Also the steering shaft was grooved with wear underneath where the shift fork mount on to the shift tube. I can't figure how it would wear there as it is covered by the shift tube, unless the steering shaft is from another truck that was a automatic, if an automatic uses the same steering shaft as a 3 on column. thanks

misstated
I realized I worded it wrong on previous post. I should have said when I pulled up on the column shift, the colum flange was moving, which was not pushing the shift tube down far enough to engage reverse or low. I know the sharp folks on this forum would catch the error. I probably have more errors in my diagnosis as most of my experence is in fairlanes and mustang. Thanks

btw: One a my chief gripes and why I HATE swaps is.
Peeps remove parts from vehicles at boneyards, do not record what the parts came from.
Then down the road, the greasy old parts end up on some Ford dealers parts counter, where the long suffering partsguy has to compare one part with another to try and figure out what the *^#@*^$ parts came from.
Been there...done that, dozens of times.
