Switching From Full-Syn to SynBlend

Hello. This is my first post here, so forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong place.

I have a 2004 Ford V-10 in my motorhome. I've always used fully-synthetic 5W-20. Amsoil first, and then Mobil1 when they came out with it.

Can I switch to MotorCraft 5W-20 Blend without any issues?

Thanks.

The only "issue" is that your wallet will be fatter. It may interfere with your driving comfort. I suggest taking it out before you sit down.

Welcome to FTE!

No problems with the switch. I've been running MC 5w-20 blend in the spring, summer and fall then putting in a full synthetic for the winter because it isn't affected by the cold quite as much.

You will notice no difference in performance, a 5w-20 oils is just that synthetic/semi-synthetic no difference they perform to the same standard. It will save money. The Motorcraft oil is regarded as a high quality oil.

As bad as this may sound, I'm completing my own little road test using Wal-Mart's "Super Tech (ST)" (produced by Warren Products) full-synthetic oil in my '99 zx2 soon. I've been going to the same Shell station every fill up and used Mobil Dino oil for the first 10000 miles for the base of the test and the ST syn. for the last 9700. What I'm testing is if the "Super-Tech" oil improves mileage at all or has any adverse or positive affect on the engine. This vehicle is driven over 2200 a month, mostly (90%) interstate.

So far, (as of 9700 miles into the super tech oil) I've noticed a few things.

1) The engine runs smoother w/ ST Syn. oil. The '99 ZX2 has a compression ratio of 10.2:1, so there is a "shake" at idle regardless of oil type. The "shake" is quelled somewhat with ST oil. At about 5000 miles the ST oil begins to thin some, so I based the oil changes off of that. I was lucky here because I changed the Dino oil @ 5000 in the first part of the test due to it looking dirty.

2) The dino oil didn't burn off as fast as the ST Syn. I had to add a 1/4 qt with ST Syn. oil between changes where the Dino seemed to be the normal level throughout the oil change period.

3) Using ST synthetic the car tends to get 24-40 miles per tank more than the dino. (Last tank 346 miles on ST vs. best tank on Dino 313. Best tank ever on ST= 353).'

4) Oil looks cleaner with ST when drained at first 5000 mile interval.

5) 3800 miles into ST use, oil pan gasket developed a static "seepage" leak. Don't know if this was because of oil, or if the gasket had deteriorated on its own due to the mileage of the vehicle. Replaced and hasn't leaked since.

I'm using Walmart ST in the wife's Lexus and have had no problems at all. It has the latest API ratings and that's what I go by.

I had been using Castrol Syntec for a year now and changed oil every 3000 miles. Used a quart or two every 600 miles. Ex has 79k on it and runs great. But the oil usage was getting worse. I just switched last week to Motorcraft blend 5-20. Same driving habits and miles, it has not used a DROP of oil. There was a big change in the MPG. SYNTEC was 15.4 mpg and the MOTORCRAFT is 12.6 mpg. and that is actual not a guess. Good luck

I was using MC 5w20 for quite some time, with no usage issues. I recently switched to Pennzoil Platinum after reading many great reviews about it. I gained about 1.5 MPG towing. No usage at all in 3k miles.

PP is a group III "synthetic" like Syntec.

When I used Mobil 1 in my '01 5.4, I would have to add a quart about every 3k miles. Mobil 1 has (had?) a POA base stock. The 5w30 I was using had a high volatility which probably contributed to the use.

Looks like several people are reporting better MPGs with synthetic oils, I tried this in my car with no difference in MPG, maybe the V10 benefits more from the synthetic than a smaller V6.

Not knocking you at all Jim but I'm having difficulty wrapping my head around the idea that oil type/brand posted a near 20% difference in mileage. How long miles have you driven since you noticed the MPG difference?

I've ran both synthetics and blends and didn't record any noticeable mpg difference. Motorcraft being the only blend I have tried. I ran Syntec, M1, Q Torque and Pennzoil Platinum and couldn't tell the difference in mpg or power. I did notice however a full syn works better for tose cold morning starts during the cold months and it tends to use more syn than blend between OCI.
