Emergency Brake Cable Tension

I have a 1993 F150, long bed, 300 i-6

My emergency brake cable broke at the pedal. I can't seem to figure out how to get the cable adjuster to release to get some slack in the system.

I believe the adjuster is in the pedal assy itself, buy am not 100% sure.

Thanks,

Paul

there is a tension bolt closer to your rear wheels on the drivers side on the outside of the frame. at least on my truck thats the only place i can find to ajust the tension on the park brake. its where the two brake cable come together, its at a bracket. youll know it when you see it.

If the cable broke at the pedal why don't you have all kinds of slack in the cable?

My 94 has no provision to adjust the cable anywhere, I doubt a 93 does either. The point just outside the frame on the drivers side only allows one cable to pull two equally, no adjustment there whatsoever.

that equalizer is adjustable - thats how you assemble it!

its probably rusted to crap. ford does that well.

but anyways, in a non-rusted-to-crap unit you hold the end of the 'rod' that is threaded - a CWFH (crescent wrench from hell) works good, and then spin off the nut on the end of the rod. but again - the rust.

now for your front cable, the one from the EQ to the pedal - it is available commercially and the installation procedure is kinda a pain, u really need to pull the carpet out of the way, and if it rusts at the firewall - ick

Try this link:

click me!

parts 9, 10, and 11 are common to all years.

parts 2-3 are for your years and part 1 is 91 and older BUT, when I popped the cab off my 90, it had parts 2-3 and I never changed it - being the original owner and all that.

Now you went and made me have to go look again, here is a picture of my 94's cable equalizer,

No adjustment there or anywhere else, we had this conversation before in another thread.

And yes every other truck, car what have ya up till this model had adjustment built in to take up slack in the cable as it stretched over time with use. Usually at the equalizer, if not a pedal that ratcheted as the pedal was pumped.

Prob be wise to replace all cables. If one broke now, not long to others break.

Here is how I fixed it

For those that are interested...

There is no tensioner on any of the cables.

I took some photo's out of the truck for clarity. You shouldn't have to remove it

The brake pedal assy looks like this (pedal is part way down):

There is a small white part near the pedal arm, this was holding back the e-brake adjustment for me:

I pried out this white part (screwdriver) completely and that loosened the cable tensioner assy in the pedal. The cable was still short, but with the white part out, the cable would pull out on a spring mechanism. Here is a photo with the part almost out:

The part can be put most of the way back in by hand, but releasing the e-brake will force it the rest of the way in:

That's how my 1993 F150 worked... your mileage may vary.
