Transmission information-- pics of numbers

just picked up this transmission for out of a 63 ford f100. wanted to know what all the fancy pants numbers meant... and what it would take to put a top loader shifter in. or at least a floor shifter adapter.

This is going onto a 1963 inline 6 cylinder 223 I believe. Thats also what it came off of.
Thanks!

The C3 means 1963.

This appears to be a Ford "303" all synchro 3 speed.

These appeared in '63 1/2 in cars, but according to Numberdummy, were in trucks earlier. Since yours says C3AR, that indicates 1963 car parts. The tailshaft housing may have another Cxxx number on it.

Check for more numbers on the tail, perhaps ND will be by to clarify.

As long as the splines and length work, and you can figure out the linkage, you should be good.

Also, look for a "HEE" or "HEF" or other 3 letter number cast on the box & post that.

ooops, looks like you posted it while I was doing this post. Hold the phone, ND may be by.

Well, Im hopeful it will fit... according to my transmission man who I bought it from he thought it might have actually come out of a f250 with the inline 6 at one time. If im not mistaken it had something to do with the tail shaft?? We had bought a very similar transmission from a 59 earlier and it was a shorter transmission... but nearly identical other than the top load.. it was a side loading.... not all gears in it were synchronized. It needed some work and he said he could sell this one for less than rebuilding the other one. We measured the shaft and it is identical length width and teeth.

The side-loaded trans would have been a Borg Warner, possibly a T 85. If it measures up and the splines are a match, install it and drive with pride.....

T86 or a T87D. The Warner T85(N) was the 3 speed O/D trans used 1965/72 on F100's, 1961/67 Galaxies.

cs65 has nailed it...it's the correct trans: Ford Type 3.03 3 speed all syncromesh.

C3AR is just the ID number for the case. The same case was used for F100/350's, Cars, Econolines, and Bronco's.

The HEF-G ID code is what one goes by.

Well this is sounding promising... so no problems stabbing it in to the 63 inline 6... everything looks right. And we have searched far and wide for a correct years tranny.

Next question is what about doing a floor shifter.
What would be the best method to go about this?
A hurst kit? someone once recommended a Jeep shifter.

Thanks for the help guys
