first blood first time out :(

Well took the truck and family out for a little fun in Joshua tree the weekend before new years for the first time and drew first blood.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2811318641422802524

could not make the turn up top so had to back out so
needless to say this is what happened to the offender...

and amazingly the wife is still smiling

and heres the damage

So what do I need to do to get this wheel hop under control? I had a 00 gm cc drw lb before this truck I took out all the time. The back end of it was not even half a bad as this thing...

Many differences in suspension between the two trucks, and stock SD's tend to hop quite a bit. Should try anywhere in the Johnson Valley with a coil sprung front end, just gets crazy out of control.
Many factors contribute to this, and much of it has to do with shocks, tires and gears. I have found that 3.73's with a diesel is rough. Takes a little while to get the turbo to spool up and once it does, it puts down some real decent power, by the time it gets to the tires, the wheel speed with 3.73's is fairly high, and the tires spin casuing a decent amount of wheel hop.
Lower gears are an option, but probably not reasonable if this is just a weekened trail rig.
Better traction is always an advantage, and of course better shocks always help control axle hop, but probably the best and most cost effective solution for this problem is to simply "air down".
I frequent the So. California high desert quite often, and letting the air out of the tires is almost manditory. Between the soft sand, and sharp rocks, having air pressures that are used for street driving are just to high to be effective for this type of terrain.
You will be amazed at how much differently the truck performs at lower pressures.
