Kind of a dumb question...

So i got my truck stuck today and when i put it in 4x4 there was this clinking sound coming from the front passenger wheel. I dont think that 4wd was engaging. I was moving maybe 3 inches forward and backward and only my back driver tire was spinning doing nothing but sinking me down into the sand. So I have 2 questions for whoever can answer. What was that clinking sound whenever i accelerated? and second question, how far does the actual tire have to move in order to have the 4wd engage on all 4 wheels?

Not a dumb question. Its the most common one asked. My guess is your IWE is bad. This would cause your 4wd to not engage on the front. As for the one tire spinning in the back I guess you don't have a limited slip rear end? or your differential is bad. Not uncommon. Even if you do have a limited slip rear end sometimes the internal clutches go bad and don't properly engage.

This is the most common problem posted for first time posters. Do a search for Integrated Wheel Ends (IWE) solenoid for a quick fix for the front.

Well for 2. the tire doesn't have to move at all I believe to kick in the 4wd I maybe wrong but the owners manual would say for sure is it electronic shift on the fly if it is you flick the switch it should kick in

no movement is required for these hubs to engage.

as soon as the solenoid break vacuum, they engage.

I've been axle deep in the mud and muck before in 2wd. slapped it into 4x4 and let it rip. had all 4 (well really 3 wheels) ripping it up instantly.

FYI: make sure the front tires and rear tires are going the same speed when you engage 4x4. rear wheels spinning while fronts are stopped = broken stuff
