Dana 60 4x4? 95 F-350

I need to replace the front u-joints on the Dana 60 (95 F-350), have done it many times on the Dana 44 not the 60 so after the hub and knuckle is off how do I get the axles out? Do the axles just slide out or do I need to take the differatial cover off?

Thanks

There's no clips inside, they'll just pull out once you get the knuckles off. But as long as you're this deep you should consider popping the carrier and replacing the inner seals.

Thanks for the reply and good advice...... Is it that simple just take off cover and 4 bolts for carrier caps , remove unit , tap in two new seals and reassemble? Don't ya have to recheck ring gear backlash after the unit was removed? Thanks

You might be able to tap in the new seals but it's tricky. I used a chunk of tubing though the opposite end of the axle tube.
The seal can be damaged very easily...two people make it a little easier.

The best method is get the right tool or make one.

Just pulling the center section out won't change any of the clearances, just made sure you put the bearing caps back on exactly the way they come of. The easiest way to remove the carrier is with a case spreader but I've never had one side I just pry them out with a small prybar. My friend did his with a comealong attached to the front bumper. My axles were chained on a flatbed so that wasn't an option for me.

I've never seem them outer seals before, are they new? I wish I knew about them when I rebuilt mine.

That's kinda what I did. I used a piece of black pipe and a big socket to tap the pass side seal in and then the same pipe with a floor flange screwed on the end to pull in the drivers side seal

They have been out for quite a while...been running them in the trail truck for 3 yrs or so....keeps all the crap out of the tubes and saves the inner seals.Well worth the money.
