trans problem

You will need to pull the codes to know for sure.
Try cleaning the VSS in the rear diff. Check the connector too.
The hard shifts are normal when the trans senses slippage or excessive
heat. It raises the line pressure to save itself. This may go away by itself after cooling
down over night. If not pull #22 & #9 fuse under the hood to reset the PCM.

i think i just had the same problem. if after stopping and shutting the truck off did it run alright? on mine it would run fine and then all of a sudden it would down shift hard. took mechanic 100 miles to get it to fail again.
came down to needing a speedometer cluster, they said it was the modular.
i also replaced the speed sensor and it did not fix the problem.
if that is the problem check car-parts.com for used cluster, alot cheaper than what i had to give for mine. make sure mileage is close to what you
have and tire size is same(tire size can be re-programmed).
