1997 F-250 7.3 Power Stroke

I have a 97 Power Stroke and I love it. It is a 2 wheel drive F-250 with a 5 speed tranny and 4:10-1 gears. It gets around 20 MPG on a trip and around 15-16 pulling my race car. What I want to know is how hot does the pyrometer have to get to hurt the engine? I have a Edge Evolution programer and it has been set on 60 HP for towing, but I want to put it up to 100 HP, and see what it does, but I do not want to hurt the engine. I do have a 4 inch exhaust all the way from the down pipe to the back bumper and no muffler, and a 3 inch down pipe. The turbo boost goes up to an little over 20 lbs. I would apreciate any and all the info that anyone can give me.
Thanks
Dave Martin

yep 1200 is the general rule of thumb for pre-turbo (pyrometer in manifold or up-pipe). Post turbo (dowpipe)is a bad idea for the pyrometer location. Its not a very accurate picture of the temps the pistons see which is what the pyrometer protects.

1200 is the rule of thumb for sustained temps. Short bursts over that are acceptable. Like when running the 1/4 mile, passing or pulling a small hill. The best way to drop temps while driving is to drop down out of overdrive or the next gear lower to rev the engine higher.

Pyrometer heat

With the Edge Programer set at 60 HP and towing on a steep hill my pyrometer gets up to 8000-10000 but not over 10000 degrees. Do think that putting it to 100 HP it will get hotter?
Thanks
Dave
