08 Tranny Question

How many times does your tranny shift? I have an 08, 4.6l that seems to shift 5 times. The code on the door shows that I have the 4 speed auto. There's a 700rpm difference when the overdrive off button is pushed compared to overdrive on and when cruising at highway speeds, it will downshift to a lower gear which in turn causes the rpm's to rise only 250 rpms. I know it's not shifting to 3rd gear due to the rpm's so what is happening hear? I'm not sure, but it sure feels like a 5sp auto. Could this be why, as I posted in another post, this truck runs so good? Please explain. Thanks, Tpepper

The reason for the perceived 5th gear is the locking/unlocking of the clutch in the torque converter when in Over Drive. So you see/feel shifts:

1. 1 -> 2
2. 2 -> 3
3. 3 -> 4 (OD)
4. TC Lockup.

That's what makes it "feel" like you have a 5spd auto when its really only a 4spd.

I'm still kinda amazed that Ford is only now putting in a 6 speed transmission.
I couldn't wait for the 09's to come out, so I got the 08.
I'm still loving it, but I really wish I had that 6 speed.
