arg, right front axel squealing and vibrating

Just went to wash the engine over lunch, got half way to car wash and the front start making a terrible squeal. I could also feel a vibration in the floor boards. Breaks feel good so I assume its the axle. Never taken one apart and as this is my only truck at the moment I need it. How hard is it to lube the front end and what do I need to get just in case the bearing's are bad. A list of parts and where I can get them would be great.

Sounds like the needle bearing on back side of unit bearing, it will do those things when it goes bad, Napa 20 bucks each and do both sides while your at it.

With the amount of noise and vibration you are describing, it sounds like a wheel bearing failure.
The car wash really had nothing to do with it, perhaps the water finally pushed it over the edge, but it would have failed next day anyhow.
Unfortunately you have to buy the whole hub assembly for around $300.00+ to replace the front wheel bearings on the 4x4 Superduty.

so, did not get a hub assembly, wanted to do some more investigation before spending $399. Got home and jacked up the front. the wheel/break assembly will turn left / right , up and down without moving the steering wheel. Its like hub is lose. The wheel was bolted down to the studs just fine, the break disk moved with the tire. I will be posting some video i took when your tube is up. This could explain the tick, tick, tick, tick i hear when going 25-30 and turning left, but it only happens when i turn left, not right.

with that much play your hub is done for sure, there should be no slop at all. your lucky the whole wheel didnt come off with it being in that kind of condition. there is no way to tighten these kind of hubs up so it will have to be replaced.

Well I know its not supposed to move that much as the drivers did not. So the question is, do i need to get the whole hub assembly or just some parts. Is there a hub assembly that you guys would recommend?

yes you have to replace the whole hub assembly, since they are not serviceable. when I did mine a few months ago, I got them straight from Ford as I know a guy in the parts department. I have a late 99 so there are a few different kinds for that year depending on build date so I didnt want to risk going with a cheaper one and it not being the right kind. they cost alil more from Ford, but mine lasted over 120k and I dont know if cheaper ones would do the same.

Definitely sounds like a passenger wheeln hub is in your immediate future.
Make sure that on top of the new wheel hub you replace all the seals and o-rings that you encounter. They are absolutely critical in achieving any longevity of the front axle parts.

So as this is my only vehicle, can I continue to use it until Tuesday. By then I will have gotten the part and installed it. Is there any danger of the hub coming out, IE my wheel popping off the truck.

Probably not, but is it worth the risk? I drove around on mine for about a month before I jacked it up and found out it was loose (and was the cause of the noise i kept hearing).
