anyone done the 3g/1 wire upgrade?

i am putting my motor back together and adding the steering pump and alternator. i got to looking at my alt and its pitiful, so i figure now is as good as any to upgrade. trying to keep everything simplistic i like the idea of a one wire alt with fewer wires to cut with the elec fan!

anyone have any good info regarding this?

anyone done some homework before and can share some tech info?

Ive done three of them between my truck and my buddys, I had a really good link, I'll try to find it for you. You wont ever regret the conversion, one of my favorite mods, super cheap and major improvement.

ok sweet, for what ever reason that didn't work the first time I tried it.

edit: see previous post for link

If your going the junkyard route, I can help you out with identifying the proper 135 amp version, as the 90 is more common and they are very similar.

I put a 3g on my 79 250 w/400. I didn't go the 1 wire route but the install was very simple non the less. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!!!!! My headlights are way brighter and the stereo even sounds better. I imagine that if you using a winch that will work alot better as well. I have pics of it installed in my gallery. It came off of a 88 or so Taurus, bolted right up, and was only something like $25!

Don't be afriad of the non-1 wire approach, it's not that bad. Ends up being a three wire job. Try this http://bcbroncos.com/3ginstall.pdf.

Here's were I got my wiring from PA Performance - You Only Buy Quality Once ! 1.877.471.8010. Slick setup, and no hunting parts down.

As I was performing my saginaw box swap, I opted for a chebby pump and pulley (serpentine) so I managed to make a bracket for this, and I also used the same 1 wire GM alternator, also with the serpentine belt. and I stole a tensioner for the same application. All I had to do was find a pulley for the water pump, and then the correct belt.
Yes March sells some bling units, but the junkyard parts came out to less than 100 bucks, and the mud does not contribute to whinning v-belts any longer. Super high revs cant shake the belt off, and the belt is crazy easy to change.
Trying to find pics of the brackets during install. Hard to see after everything is in already.
I like the 3G alternator, dont get me wrong, but the chebby route was convenient, and cheap.
