hard to troublshoot stall issue 03 Expedition

I have been having problems with stalling since February 2016, CEL goes off, but no codes were given.

I've been taking good notes and after reviewing them it turns out that after filling up the tank the truck stalls from time to time. Once the tank goes to about 3/4 (i think) I no longer have a problem stalling. I bought the vehicle on 7/22/2015 @ 213,402 and I have a receipt from the previous owner showing a Fuel pump replacement on 5/12/2015 @ 212,281.

It normally stalls when the engine is at operating temp. When it stalls I wait a bit and can drive until another stall.

Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this issue? I've attached my maintenance form.

Unscrew the gas cap (will eventually set an EVAP leak code which needs to be ignored). See if it still stalls with the cap loose.

---or-

Next time it stalls, quickly open the gas cap and listen carefully to see if you hear air getting sucked into the tank.

^^^ What he said!

If the tank venting system isn't letting in air, it is difficult to pump out liquid. The venting for the tank is typically done through the top of the fuel tank through a fuel vapor vent valve.

Opening the cap right after the concern occurs will confirm the issue.

I was just wondering - what codes were given?

thanks for the help! I'll check it out tonight and tomorrow. Sorry I meant NO codes are given during stall when CEL is on, I'll fix that.

I just went through this with our 03. I found a bad fuel pump relay. Check out my thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...dom-stall.html

Good luck.

The problem is the Fuel vapor vent valve located at the top of the fuel tank, see #5 in the attached PDF. The valve is designed to prevent liquid fuel from entering the charcoal canister/emissions system. When the valve fails, liquid gas can enter the line and fill the charcoal canister. After refueling, the PCM on the vehicle detects a change in fuel level. Then, when the engine meets certain temperature and driving criteria, the PCM issues a purge command to the charcoal canister to remove the stored gas vapors. It’s at that point that all the liquid gas in the line gets sucked into the charcoal canister. The PCM expects to see gas vapors entering the intake manifold and it is prepared to adjust air/fuel mixtures to compensate. However, it is not prepared to see liquid gas coming into the intake. That’s what causes the engine to stall. Unfortunately, I think the valve is not sold separately and the only fix is to replace the entire gas tank, or to only fill it to 3/4.

Thanks for the info. I have found out that If I do not tighten my gas cap I can drive just fine. With no problems. I have also not filled up the tank, but only filled up to 3/4.

I've had my ignition coils go out on me so I had to put everything off until I got that fixed.

I have a 3 hour drive coming up next week. Would it be trustworthy enough to drive that far with this problem?
