Found a 86 6.9L need a little help deciding?

Hi- I found a 86 6.9L auto XLT Lariat non turbo extended cab with 160,000 miles been in the same family since new on craigslist today for 1200.00 bucks. Drove 40 miles to see it and take a test drive. The son who is around 50 yrs old inherited the truck 4 yrs ago and was insistent that nothing has ever been replaced on the motor including the glowplugs. Took it for a test drive and it drove like a new truck. After driving it I noticed several fuel line leaks. All the rubber looks origional in the motor and it all needs to be replaced. The rear wheel wells have severe rust. Other wise it drove like a cadillac, honestly. I was thinking of buying it for if nothing else a parts truck for my 84. If someone can let me know if I should do this or if it's a good deal. Thank You, Stephen

HMMMM....Can't see why that wouldn't be the way to go. Engine compartment alone should return the investment in spares.

The engine alone is worth over 1200 dollars.

The last few trucks like that I bought were around 6-800 dollars. You can buy junkyard motors around here for $500 all day long. The same junkyard will sell you a C6 for around $300. Is the motor in REAL good shape, then maybe. I just bought an 86 F350 Flat bed RUST FREE, 6.9 and 4 spd manual for 750 dollars. I bought an 83 rusted completely out with a wore out front end that ran good for 400 dollars, put the motor in something else. It really depends on how bad you want it for 1200, but just know that the value of old diesel trucks has gone to crap since the recent skyrocket of Diesel prices.

Used diesel C6 isn't really worth more than $300. If it indeed only has 160000 on the clock than I think its a good price. What sort of rust is there on the rest of the truck? a box is easy to replace. If the rubber fuel lines have grey paint on it than you KNOW it is factory original.

I think its worth the price from what I've seen so far.
