AzBlueWolf:
The position was with Helicopter Grand Canyon Helicopters - GCH at the Grand Canyon Airport, Grand Canyon, AZ.
At the time they had offered me a position and I had asked for a letter of employment so that I could buy a vehicle, for company housing was about 20+ miles south of the airport.
Catch - 22: No vehicle then no job as can't get to work, yet without a job can't get a loan to buy a vehicle.
They declined the letter of employment with the lame, we don't want you to come all this way and then we decide to let you go. We've decided to limit hiring to "local" candidates.
Heck, short-stays happens to aviation contractors with some regularity.
I'm thinking sure, there you are out in the middle of nowhere, so how far away is the limits for "local?" And I'm thinking, right, as soon as I arrive I'll have to sign all new documents anyways which will supersede any prior letter of employment.
Thanks for asking.

How about making a graph of Mangler versus employment time over the past seven years and post it as the desktop on the Mangler's PC for the next Mangler to 'get the message' on his first day of work.
