First off why are you not a MD member?
Follow the link in my sigantureto become one.

Sounds like u-joints in the drive shaft 4 of them.
There are 2 in the center Cardin joint which is
a pain to do but easily doable in a home garage
but they are tricky.
Don't forget to put a line on the drive shaft before
you take it apart. If you don't it could run out of
balance and cause some real problems and if you
replace 1 replace them all.
Just mt 2 cents.

knowing which trans you have would help-does it do it in 2 wheel or just 4 wheel-kinda vague on your description

that could be either one? the e4od had lots of problems in the earlier years-I would run a code scan and see if ya get any stored codes-some trans are electronic controlled and one small glitch will make them act up something terrible-and some act up just slightly low on fluid

I think it sounds more like universal joints rather than tranny....like Dave said up above. Crawl under truck while in park, engine off. Grab driveshaft and twist....see if there's a lot of play twisting one direction, then the other. Refer to Dave's post up the page a bit.

you know Bud sometimes it is best to block front wheels raise rear of truck and put in neutral so the shaft can be spun-if they are in a bind you can't feel the play at times-just for future reference I have had that problem before

Also, just "looking" at them (if they are that bad) you can see that there are toast!
