performance for an 86 6.9 diesel
does anyone know where to get performance parts for an 86 6.9 diesel? wenerver i look for them all i find are parts for the newer powerstrokes im not really needing turbos jus engine components and other stuff. and does anyone no if you cood fit any turbo to this truck? cause i no ther are limits to the boost you can run on a stock 6.9 so i was wonderin if a turbo from a car mite work for this truck.

Just like the old hot rod shop question, "How fast do you want to go, how much money do you have?"
With internal engine mods to stock parts I am running mid 20's for boost on my 86 engine.
The only non IDI parts I used were ARP head studs, header wrap and grade 8 bolts to hold the intake and exhaust manifolds on with my ATS turbo.
With the internal engine clearances, there is no room for stuff like high lift cams, and higher compression pistons.
Without more air, there is no use to add more fuel, it will just be wasted as black smoke.
And running high boost, means lowering the stock 22.5 to 1`compression ratio by milling the pistons.
Dollar for dollar, there is no other engine mod you can do that will return as much power increase as a turbo will.

without tearing the motor down and milling the pistons, and strengthening a few different things you could pull 10 stock, i had a buddy that put an aurora 3000 from a junked cummins onto an idi and it lasted for a while.....
and by a while i mean a couple minutes... it went and scattered parts for a quarter mile

I have thought about taking a turbo off a Cummins before and installing it just because they seem to be everywhere for sale used. The turbo kits for these things are really hard to find unless you want to pay sooo much for one.
Most of the turbos on any of the diesels are the same...even as some gassers. You can get different wastegate actuators to act at different pressures. Just get a one for about 8-12psi and a little ingenuity with some tubing sheetmetal and a welder and I think it could be done. I figured the turbo could fit on the passenger side fender well area (put a 6.9 in a '79 so not sure if there would be room for anyone else). I think it could be a pretty cheap though not very pretty setup.

Although the cross over under the engine and the downpipe are not installed in this picture, look at the up pipe and then consider a 3" downpipe just to the left of the up pipe.
Now go out and look at the rear of the passenger side head and get a feel for how much room you have to run two pipes that you have to make.
You can go out and buy a new turbo just like ATS uses for under 1000 dollars.
Now fabricate a cross over pipe, turbo pedistal/oil drain, turbo outlet, down pipe and a way to get the boost into the intake.
By the time you make all those parts, the kit will be cheap at 2000 dollars.
