27 MPG (city) DP-Tuner

After fixing the resistors in the overhead trip display and reseting the MPG reading, my trip averaged 22.9 MPG which with 37" tires converts to 27.25MPG. My PCM was flashed by DP-Tuner to the 80eco setting.

Is the PCM sending a false signal to my overhead trip computer?? There is no way that I am getting 27MPGs. Any thoughts?

Truck Specs:
7" Front 4" Rear Lift
37X13.5 Mud Grapplers
5" downpipe and exhaust
K&N sheet filter in stock intake
DP-Tuner 80eco PCM Flash

The overhead displays have never been known for their accuracy. How many miles did you drive it to get that average? If you just took a short trip, the number may start dropping.

I noticed you've got a drop in K&N filter. Several folks around here have bought new engines because the K&N drop in couldn't filter well enough in front of the turbo. I'd recommend taking the top off the filter box and looking inside the plastic inlet tube. If you see any signs of dust or dirt, find a different filter ASAP.

Onboard MPG display is normally off with a chip/tune.

I'd recommend correcting your speedometer with something like the TruSpeed from Superlift or ReSpeed from TS Peformance.

I also agree with ditching that drop in K&N.....and ditching the stock air box if you can.

I am going to napa tomorrow to get the filter. I want to try that zoodad mod and try to get some cooler air in the filter. Thinking about moving the battery back and putting the air box behind the headlight. 4" tube seems to be the best solution hopefully I can bend it up a little bit. The clips on my stock box are broken.

Is there anything I should do while I have the intake tubes off?

I am going to attempt this tomorrow.... hopefully a success story to follow.

STOP DRIVING YOUR TRUCK. Your turbo wheel spins up to 130,000 RPM's, so the little tiny pieces of dirt your broken airbox is letting by will eventually destroy your turbo, and can dust your entire engine.

At this point, your best bet (cheapest and quickest) will be to remove the stock air box and pick up a 6637 filter. You can use a piece of 4" exhaust pipe to connect the new filter to the intake tube, or a 3" PVC coupler (4" OD) will do for now. Pick up an extra hose clamp and put it all together.

What we call the 6637 filter is a Wix filter, part number 546637. Your major parts stores (NAPA, Carquest, etc) that sell wix filters, or private label filters usually made by wix can cross reference that number.

If you scroll a little further down the main forum listing page, you'll find a section dedicated to the 99 - 03 7.3 powerstroke. You can search about the 6637 filter there. When you first see it, you'll think it won't fit, but it does. If you don't like that filter, there are other intake options out there, just make sure you fix the airbox problem before you drop several thousand dollars on a new motor.

DIY 6637..... Napa wanted like $48 for the filter and the 3" pvc couple was $1. Took 20 minutes. The turbo pshhhh sound after you let off the gas is loud. Thanks for all the help.

Glad to hear you got that fixed before it ended up costing you. Now if you decide you like the 6637 filter (most here do) and want to keep it, you can save some money by ordering it from fleetfilter dot com

Type in 46637 in the search box. Current price is 28.86 plus shipping. You can save a little on shipping if you buy 2 at a time.
