Oil Consumption or Burning oil

Hello Everyone,

I have a 2005 Ford Expedition (5.4L 3V) with 44,000 miles on it. I noticed I been burning about (2 qts) of oil within every 5,000 miles. I've been checking the oil level when I changed my oil and oil filter until 20,000 miles. I used the 5w-20 blend oil for about 20,000 miles and then I switch to Mobil 1 all synthetic. I still have the same problem, but now with the synthetic I'm burning about (2 - 1/2 qts) of oil within 5,000 miles. Does anyone notice/or have this problem with their For Expediton? My ford local dealer in (WA) did a oil consumption & analysis test and found nothing wrong. They say that this is normal for this SUV and this engine.

Just to make sure, I called up three other local dealers in (WA). They all say that they have a new spec form from FORD on this issue. All the mechanics at the Ford Dealers have this notice on their files. It says that this SUV - Expedition (5.4L 3V) engine can burn 1 qts of oil for every one thousand miles. I don't know, but If this is true then in 5,000 miles shouldn't I have only two qts of oil in my engine? Remember this SUV holds 7 qts of oil. I'm just trying to see if anyone has this same problem/issue or is Ford correct. I hope Ford is not hidding something else.

Thanks

I have a 2003 5.4 EB 2 wheel drive. 105,000 miles, change oil every 5,000 miles with non-syn oil. I lose no oil between changes.

I have a 99 amd gp through almost a quart of synthetic every 6,000 miles. These Ford modular engines are known for using oil, but a quart in 1000 miles to me seems like alot. In today's world I just don't think it should be like this.

2.5 quarts seems like a lot. The modulars are known for/designed to burn about 1 quart every 5k miles. My 2002 5.4 uses 1/2 quart every 5k miles. I carry a spare quart with me all the time just for this reason. But, yes, 2.5 quarts does seem excessive.

You carry a spare quart because yours burns 1 quart every 10K miles? Don't you think you're being a tad bit paranoid?

Paranoid, no. Perhaps I should have added another word in my post or explained more. Mine uses approximately 1/2 a quart every 5k miles. It has been known to use a full quart in between oil changes, and it was then I initially started carrying the spare quart after the first time the engine was a quart low. With the amount of driving I do, I prefer to have that spare quart available if the level drops below the hatched line on the dipstick and I cannot get to an auto parts store. Not every place carries the 5W-20 Motorcraft Synthetic Blend. I take extra care of my vehicle and like having all my fluids topped off to where they are supposed to be. I don't freak out if the level is 1/2 a quart down, but those times where it is a quart low, I like to be able to bring it back up to where it is supposed to be. That's why I carry the spare.

I have noticed on my 99, that it can vary sometimes, from 1 and 1/2 quarts to none in 3000 miles? I just use good conventional motor oil, but my truck does have the leaky head syndrom, but if you stay 3/4 above the add, and just below full it doesnt leak....funny

I lose at least 1 qt every 4,000 miles and I have no oil leaks. Once I lost over 3 qts. in 3,000 miles, no big deal

I've had the "sudden consumption" like deanjet mentions -- it only happened once tho. I found that for our Expy, it uses less oil in the 5w 30 weight. I've run 10w 30 and it uses between 1/2 and 1 qt in 5k miles and 5w 30 w/ no loss and now 5w 20 for the last 10k miles (two OCs) and lost about 1/2 qt in each 5k OCI. This is all with std. dino oil btw, and we tow regularly a very heavy trailer (7k or so, heavy for the Expy)...

I think I'll stick with the 5w 20 for now...

I had a 97 with 192,000 miles and it would burn about 1/2 QT between oil changes @ every 5,000 miles: What a good truck that was!

Mine uses approximately 1/2 ~ 1 quart of M1 5w30 in 5000 miles. My dad's E-250 van(5.4) uses 1 quart every 1200 miles. Never any smoke or leakage...

My Expedition burns about 1qt. between oil changes at 3000 miles. Auto Zone had a sale for Mobil 1 extended life with filter for $35. I only have 2000 miles on the oil and have had to add two quarts of oil. I tried Mobil 1 when I first purchased the vehicle with 78,000 and now recall the same problem. I'm switching back to Motorcraft. Not much of a deal at seven bucks a quart.

Oil consumption is something that varies according to so many different conditions, it is frustrating at times. I know from exp. that gas engines use oil up to 1000/qt. Mercedes- Benz engineers expect oil usage of 640/qt to be found. Engine temp, oil temp, engine mileage, load all effect oil use. If you only drive short trips,(low oil temp) the normal H20 dilution will make it appear to not use oil at all. Then when you take a longer run and oil temp is higher ( 230 +) will volitize the H20 and you will seem to have sudden oil use
