Transmission shifting hard

OK, I went to Advanced and got the filter for the E40D. It came with an optional gasket. It fit in my tranny fine. I guess the same filter fits either the e40d or the 4r100,that is if I have a 4r100. Lowes had a nice prepackaged 3/8 ID clear vinyl hose 10 ft long for about $4 in the plumbing section that worked perfectly for the flush. I used a clamp to hold it into a five gallon bucket and flushed about 4 gallons of fluid through the system following the instructions. Truck is shifting a lot smoother now though first to second is still a bit like a race car. I think the guy who owned the truck before me must have put a chip in it or something. Anyway, after my short test drive all seems to be back to normal. I will get back if things change for the worse on my next road trip. Thanks for all the info, could not have done it without the help!

The last year Ford made the E4OD was 1998. The 4R70W was never mated to the diesel. It wouldn't last 10 seconds behind a diesel. Also, the 4R100 was the ONLY automatic EVER mated to the 7.3L diesel from 1999 to 2003. Tell Autozone I said their information is WRONG!

Very similar transmissions -- Mark will be able tell you how similar.
Just be careful with that filter -- AZ tried to sell me the filter with the short pickup. Supposedly, they think the short pickup is for the 2WD, and the long pickup is for the 4WD. Mine has the long pickup, and I have a 2WD. Far as I know the pans are the same on both trannys. Can you confirm that Mark?

The E4OD and 4R100 use the same pans. The filters and gaskets will fit either one. If your truck has the black rubber gasket, reuse it. It is MUCH better than the cork gasket that comes with the filter.
The E4OD had a deeper pan for the 4x4 than the 4x2. There were 4x2 and 4x4 filters, and you had to install the right one in the right pan or you would have problems. The 4R100 eliminated the shallower 4x2 pan and used the deeper 4x4 pan for all, so all 4R100s need the longer pickup filter.

Well, after one trip the tranny is banging second gear as it was before the fluid change...I obviously needed to change the fluid anyway but it apparently was not the cause of the problem. When it shifts from first to second it bangs like you dropped the clutch on a stick shift if you are going the right speed. If you stomp on it it shifts better and if you go really slow it shifts better. Another thing it does is if you go to pass a car at say abput 55-60mph, it will downshift properly but when it shifts back into the higher gear it bangs so hard you feel like you should look back at the road behind you to see if any parts are laying in it. Is there any kind of adjustment I can make somewhere? Tranny's fine other than this small problem...

Your line pressure modulator valve may have gotten excessively worn. It's caused by a steel valve riding in an aluminum body.
Google "Sonnax valve". It's cheap, and may fix your problem.
It's a common problem with high-mileage 4R100's.

Thanks for the info. I just ordered one for $55 and found the step by step instructions. I can't believe I was just there and didn't do this. With 300K miles I think that was a no brainer. Hopefully anyone else having this problem will benefit from my situation. Bottom line is if you have a truck shifting badly with a lot of miles and your are doing a filter/fluid change, put this part in while you are there. If you don't, you will be like me doing things all over again and wasting 8 extra quarts of tranny fluid not to mention a whole lot of time. After I get the parts in and do the install I will report back with the results.

We have a winner!
I took the pan off yesterday to put the sonnax valve/spring kit in and all was well until I opened the tube for the 1-2 accumulator spring and found the OEM spring broken into about 5 pieces. The other 2 springs were fine. This kit has "helper" springs that are a smaller diameter than the original equipment springs. These springs are installed inside the original springs. So, I needed a replacement original spring. Call the dealer right? Wrong! They don't have parts smaller than the whole accumulator listed in their computers even though the accumulator has a ton of springs, clips and other crap in it. So, I found a tranny shop willing to help me out who gave me a spring. Problem solved. Tranny shifts great now. Lesson learned:...if your tranny has 300K miles on it and has ANY problems shifting, YOU NEED TO FLUSH THE FLUID AND PUT THIS KIT IN! The kit is only 50 bucks and you are right there, it's a no brainer.
