Close-ratio GM NP435

I think I've found a close ratio NP435D (GM version) transmission to replace my AOD.

It's got a 1.19:1 third gear, which eliminates the massive 3rd - 4th gap in the normal Ford-version 435. Low gear is 4.9:1, compared to 6.68:1 on the Ford .

So you should have 4 usable road gears, & no big gaps.

Has anyone driven one of these? How did you find it? I don't need a granny low.

That sounds kinda like the Dodge NP445 4 spd, which was an option on there trucks starting in late 60's i believe,it was mostly designed for the camper carrying crowd who wanted a reasonably low 1st gear, and closer spacing between the rest of gears, but who didnt need a 6-1 or lower granny 1st. Ive either called about, looked at or bought a lot of 60's and 70's trucks,Fords,Chevy's,GMC's,Dodges,Internationals,a nd Jeeps(several irritated former neighbors will attest to those ive bought), and while both GM and dodge offered this gear box,ive yet to see one.... Im guessing they werent a common option. Im not sure what you have, but have you considered a T-19, it might suit your purposes?

Thanks
I've got an AOD transmission in the truck at the moment, & it's OK for now, but I prefer the full control ( & a bit more economy ) of a manual.
I'm in a hilly area & I think I would find the wide gaps of the common NP435 a big headache - lugging in 4th or screaming in 3rd - while 1st sits almost unused. In a flatter area it wouldn't really be a problem.

I've heard of the NP445 (a lighter duty trans, all synchro?) but as far as I know, the one I have found is a NP435D- I've yet to see it.

The close-ratio T-19 would be fine, but they did not come to NZ or Australia in the F-Series trucks, so are rare here.

I wasnt aware of your location, and i suppose it does change everything! Realizing that you will have to make some changes to fit this trans. in your truck(more so since its out of a GM) what did International Harvester send over to your part of the world? ive heard that a lot of IH's went to Australia, and they used a lot of Borg-warner boxes,T18,T19,T98's. just so you know,im not attempting to discourage your choice, but rather asking if you have other good choices as well.........best of luck,Bob

I hadn't considered hunting down an IH truck to get a T19.

International has had a long history out here in trucks, tractors & machinery, I think back at least as far as 1900, & maybe earlier with horse-drawn gear. I did an machinist apprenticeship with an IH dealership in the early 80's. We had several light IH trucks there - C1100's etc. I didn't know they had T19's in them - excellent, durable old trucks.

The NP435D will fit straight in, however - same input, splining, spigot etc on that particular version, but clutch & pedals, driveshaft etc, would all have to be set up.

But I'll look into the details of the IH version T19
Thanks very much, Bob

Ken

Just figuring that more options are always better, and often less expensive!

It was worth a try Bob, but the IH-version T19 evidently has a different input shaft, case & bellhousing bolt pattern, so would need to be adapted - anything can be done, but it probably would involve an extra day's work to fit. I'll keep it as a standby option if the NP435 doesn't work out
