Years ago, when I had to replace a smashed LH mirror, I ended up putting on an old Peterbilt part. My buddy had it laying around in his dad's estate, and suggested that I try it to see if it would fit. I had to move the bracketing around, and used the opportunity to replace some rusted hardware, but it fit well enough. Then I swapped it over to the RH side, for better visibility on the off-hand. I like it better than the stock Ford mirror head. Also, rather than adding a bracketed mirror for blind spots, I picked up a cheap self-adhesive 'cats eye' mirror & stuck it in the lower outside corner.
Disgusting thing about when the mirror broke. We'd had storms that were pretty bad, and I was grateful for the truck's ground clearance and for the armor quality of the old iron. But I couldn't slow down and swerve out of the way fast enough to avoid a small tree that had blown over. It occupied about hald of the fast lane and only needed one chance to smack my mirror.
I went to the local Police Department to warn them about the road hazard. It was on a main thuroughfare, and others were bound to strike the tree as well. The cop's reply was abominable: "Didn't you swerve to avoid it?!?"
Well excuse me for trying to be a good Samaritan. Next time I'll let YOU do the work. Sheesh, what a jerk.
