Front driveshaft hits my crossmember...

I just finished a 6" lift and Dana 60 swap into my '87 F250 HD. Everything went great, except my front driveshaft rubs on my transmission crossmember. I have a 460 and C6.

I know that I have to shorten my driveshaft about an inch because of the new Dana 60, but that's not going to keep it from hitting the crossmsmber.

Has anybody ran into this problem? Is there another crossmember that will allow the driveshaft to fit without rubbing? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Scott

Front driveshaft hits my crossmember...

I have a friend with a 6" Superlift 83 F-250 his front driveshaft also hits the crossmember if the suspension droops any.

I to would like to know what to do.

I have a feeling in order to fix it you would have to make a custom cross-member.

Why not take a grinder and grind a little "U" for the driveshaft.

Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Sunroof, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .

Check out my Gallery for a look-see.

Then theres:
99' Mustang GT 4.6L
88' F-250 Superduty 4x4 351/c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 with a
3 spd column shifter. Top speed is 65mph, Go Baby Go!

It would have to be a pretty big U but, I have thought about doing that. On the other hand it wouldn't be very nice when you are in a big mud bog pit and the entire cross-member breaks off the truck .

Brian

But it would be funny

Well you might have to fab something up. That happens when you get a high lift like that.

What you really need to do is notch the area for the shaft clearence, then have a welder "box" the section back in on the drop angle you need with 3/16" or 1/4" steel plate. This will give the room and keep the strength.

That's a good idea, since I'll have to cut a big notch to keep the shaft from rubbing. I'll try to post pics in a few days.

Front driveshaft hits my crossmember...

I just found out the mine (91 F-250HD) is going to rub with 4" of lift. I am doing a 7.3 5spd to a 460, C-6 swap and the tail adapter on the C-6 locates the transfer case about 4" further back than it was. The the rear driveshaft is getting shortened as I type this.

Front driveshaft hits my crossmember...

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Jul-02 AT 09:34 PM (EST)]Most transfer cases are clockable by one bolt hole but that isn't going to help you none you will have to make a drop bracket to accomadate the driveline drop but use 1/4" steel to do for strength
another thing you might want to consider since you go off-road alot is a 80 degree CV joint for the front driveshaft it will allow alot of room for angle and give you more strength when boopin thru the mud pit

My front drive line does the same thing except I can't even connect the drive shaft the the transfer case and axle at the same time. The drive shaft when connected to the tranfer case hits the crossmember and also is about 3 inches away from connecting (above) I don't know what to do anybody know a simple trick with out having to fab. Something?

Someone has been digging in the thread graveyard. 13 years old this one...
Do you have the F350 dual cardan shaft? That in itself will help.
No good way around this without fabbing something up crossmember wise though.

We did a 6" lift and SAS on my brother's 83 FSB. We ran into the same issue. I ended up notching the crossmember, boxed it in, and added a couple gussets on the bottom side. No problems since!
