Question DTC P0500 Question

My son's neighbor has a late 99 PSD and asked for an AE demo. I showed him some of the more common tests and pulled the DTCs. The only code was P0500. I cleared this DTC and it returned when I pulled codes again. The truck runs fine, no problems at all.

A DTC list I have says:

P0500 - VSS - Vehicle speed sensor malfunction - Sensor, circuit, PCM, PSOM, TR failure, low trans. fluid

AE DTC retreive only showed this:

P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor A

My questions are:

1) Since the DTC refers to low trans fluid I am assuming the VSS referred to is probably the one at the tranny and not the one at the rear diff. Do you think that is a correct assumption?

2) I beleive I read that the two VSSs are interchangeable. Is that correct?

3) In the first DTC discription what do PSOM and TR refer to?

He had to head for Tuscon and we got no further than this other than his tranny fluid was OK. I am going to check out his truck next weekend and would like to have some answers for him.

And get this, the truck has less than 56,000 miles on it. It's an absolutely cherry stock 2wd SC SB Lariat auto. I offered him cash on the spot. He won't sell, big surprise, but I am first on the list if he changes his mind.

EDIT : I found a reference to PSOM - Programmable Speedometer Odometer Module

Robin,

Are you using a generic DTC list that applies to other vehicles as well? The 99 manual lists P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor. It makes no mention of the fluid level. Yes one of the sensors in the tranny is the same part number, but I don't remember if it's the OSS or TSS.

The manual calls for trouble shooting the VSS on the pumpkin. 1999 PC/ED Manual

DTC's and the related pinpoint tests are the last listing on the menu on the left under Section 4.
