what to look out for

im taking a look at a 1999 f250 xlt 4x4 with the 7.3 engine. has 160,000 miles and i was told it was kept up very well. what should i take a look at when inspecting it before i purchase it, ive never owned a diesel before. any help would be great

Click here for another very good used truck buyers guide. Don't forget about the obvious stuff- brakes, ball joints, tie rod ends, tires. As the buyer's guide said, see if you can find someone who is familiar with the PSD so that they know what to look for a little better. Good luck with the purchase, I just bought my 99 F250 PSD in March with 163K on it and it's been a good truck so far.

Rust, wheel openings, bottoms of doors, and tailgate bottom.

Take it to a mechanic. Trust me, it's worth it. I did not do this and have put about $5000 into repairs in the first 3 months of ownership.

Be sure and look at the input side of the turbo. The vanes will have some wear, but any pitting, etc. isn't acceptable.
