Break in? Oil Question...

I am about 3 weeks out from receiving my new 2009 F350 CC 6.4. I want to hear educated opinions about oil during the break in period.

I was going to run to about 1000 miles with the factory oil, then change oil using a 50/50 blend of Motorcraft and Mobile Turbo-Diesel. I would then run to the 5000 mark and switch to 100% Mobile Turbo Diesel.

Exxon/Mobile states the "conventional oil until broken in" thing is a myth, that you can use synthetic right away. I know Corvettes, BMWs, and other high end cars come with synthetics right off the block.

What do you guys think? Should I just change to 100% Mobile at the 1000 mark?

FYI- After break in, I ran Mobile Turbo Diesel in my 7.3 all it's life. 250,000 miles and it still ran like new when the new owner drove it away... It's a great oil.

I would think it ok, as long as it meets the oil specks for the motor.

I have 1900 miles on mine, its a 08 and I am getting ready to do my 1st oil change. I think I will look at that Mobile Turbo-Diesel too.

It is great oil, and it exceeds the manufacturers recommendations. Off topic...How do you like it so far?

so far like it real well. getting about 13.5 city up to 17 on highway, have towed my trailer a few times around the area to get a feel for it.

Going camping next weekend up to Luary caverns in VA. Will know then! So far only issue is a hard shifting from 2nd to 3rd, a fluke with the pcm as no one else is having that issue so they are gonna put a new one in Monday.

No. Although I do think you have a great idea getting rid of the factory fill at 1,000 miles (I went 1,500). I'd recommend changing when the odometer is at 1,500 miles with conventional (Motorcraft) then again at 5,000 miles with Motorcraft and switch to Mobil1 at 10,000 miles. Just be certain it is CJ-4 rated. Your engine wear metals will continue to be high until about 40,000 miles with the 6.4l and will decrease after 50,000 miles. That's right- I'd also recommend periodic oil testing (1X per year) to make sure all is well.

Good luck

Does the Ford service schedule call for a first oil change before 10K miles? I know that a lot of you guys do a few early changes during the breakin, but what is the actual ford requirement. Thanks!

I think Ford states 10,000 unless severe duty, then 5000. But, with all the metal coming off in various places when breaking in an engine, I feel an early change is worth it.
