Bass drops off automatically

I have an 05 Ford f250 that came stock with a 6 disc cd player in it. I ended up changing the stock deck out to a Shaker 500 from a 'Stang all of the speakers to Alpine 5x7 Type R's. I sounds a lot more detailed and is defenitly louder but it seems at the higher volume levels like the deck will back the bass off to the point there's barely any bass at all.

The old deck with the stock speakers seemed to do this, the Shaker with the factory speakers did to. What's the deal? Or do I already know the answer.........buy a new deck (but I really like my steering wheel controls).

I'd bet you have one or more speaker out of phase. Turn the volume up and fade from right to left and then front to rear. If the bass increases you are out of phase.

I went by a wiring diragram to get the +/- right on the speakers.....I think that the diagram was correct.

What you described is very similar to MECP notes on phase. Give it a try. It's possible the wire guide is correct, but the new radio switched one or two pairs.

Is there any way to be certain (using a multimeter) as to what wires are + and what are -. I know that with music playing you should look for the cone of the speaker to move outwards, but sometimes that can be decieving and hard to tell what way it's moving.

Thanks again.

Unfortunately, audio is AC and there is no real +/-. It's signal and return. A DMM in either direction will positive voltage.

OK, I guess that I'll have to do it with the visual test.

I've heard noise to the effect that all Ford factory radios back off on the bass at higher volume levels. Probably as protection for either the amp, or the speaker(s), or both.

That's what I'm thinking, I looked at the Mustang schematic and the Sduty one and they're identical for speaker output and polarity.

I still plan on checking at least the front speakers with a visual test since they can be seen w/o taking everything back apart.
