Unhappy 4R70W, only 2 gears left.

It's the 4spd auto in my 2000 stang, I believe it's the same one used in the V6 F-150's. I changed the fluid and filter and swapped in a modded valve body. Now I only have 2nd gear and reverse. I have access to all the gear positions on the shifter, but all the forward moving postions put the car in 2nd gear and keep it there. It will shift into OD but then the motor just revs up and the car starts to slow down. Fluid is full(Mercon V) checked at operating temp and idling in park. Tranny only has 72k miles. I talked to the guy who modded the valve body and he said nothing he changed on it would have that effect. I plan to drain the tranny...again, and double check the detent pin is in the right position. If it's good then I am going to swap the solenoids from my original valve body to the new one. Any other input is welcome. I dont like auto transmissions for reasons like this, I have a feeling that when this tranny does die, a 5spd swap will be planned.

2nd gear in a 4r70w happens when both solenoids are off. The solenoids may be unplugged, but this should give you a code and wont explain the shift to overdrive part.

When you say that it will shift into OD do you mean that it shifts from 2nd to OD that is acting like a neutral?

Here is a on off chart for you

1st = Sol 1 - on Sol 2 - off

2nd = Sol 1 - off Sol 2 - off

3rd = Sol 1 - off Sol 2 - on

4th = Sol 1 - on Sol 2 - on

Hope this helps

Yeah, OD acts like neutral. I tried shifting manually so I start with the OD off when I hit about 40mph still in 2nd I turned the OD on and it just acted like I had shifted into neutral.

A scanner would be a great tool at this point, we have no idea if the trans or computer is at fault.

If it was working fine before the valve body work I would think the problem would be with the valve body, missing ball, valve in backwards, wrong gasket, ect.

What was the mod they did for the valve body?

Scanner says the car is fine. The mod was just enlargeing some holes in the separator plate.

I am more interested in the data stream of the scanner, not just the codes.

I would like to see if the computer is commanding first gear, like to know what the MLPS switch is doing and ignition voltage at the computer, ect.

I'm putting the old VB back in right now to see if maybe something wasn't wrong with the new one. When I had the pan off, my wife ran the shifter through the gears and I could hear something electrical going on in the tranny. If that doesn't work it looks like I will be off to get raped by a mechanic.

The car works again so it must have been the VB. I still want to do this mod, just not right now since I am really sick of the smell of ATF. The guy is gonna give me a refund and I will get another one to try next time I service my transmission.

Just out of curiosity, who is the 'guy' that you got the valve body from? This sounds eeirly familiar. There is a kit floating around that is kind of not the best thing to do to your transmission.

His name is steve, he runs VAP auto. He only sells a small selection of mustang parts right now. He's good, I've read lots of info from people who have used his stuff with great results. He was even willing to let me take the modified separator plate from the bad VB and swap it with the factory plate in my good VB and still give me a full refund. I will be doing business with him again.

Last time I talked to Steve he was selling those questionable kits. I sure hope he has since moved on to doing what I advised him to do for his kits and started back to drilling his own plates. There have been way too many failures after installation of the others and a lot of discussion on the origin and end quality of that product he tried.

I'll most likely just order the plate next time instead of a complete VB. That way the only variable will be whether or not I screw something up.

I did just install one of the intake spacers he is making for the mustangs. It works pretty good, feels like i'm running the stock tire size again. It's also improved my vac. signal under acceleration.
