That looks like the pitman will clear the leaf no problem. Maybe some extreme articulation.... could get that leaf to touch, but the stops should take care of that. Either way it looks like you got a good plan!

The leafs aren't in the front shackle in the pic with the box in - they are actually still dropped below the front hanger by 3" or so. BUT the leafs are the least of my worry at this point. The pitman arm is now offset and not directly above the leafs (as long as I find a 78/79 D60). I am now concerned about the tire rubbing on the steering box itself at full bump/full lock. That and the heim/drag link hitting on the cross member.

A little suspension cycling should tell the whole story though. I'll be getting on that tomorrow night hopefully.

Why are you using the Dodge box?

Was the original Ford box mounted on the outside on those trucks? (Been to long ... CRS)

I do believe you are going to have clearance issues from what I can see.
(Though I can't see it to well from 3500+ miles away. )

been covered a few times in the thread.

Short answer - the previous owner made a bad choice in steering box/install and I had the dodge box...

Saginaw boxes are STRONG and are on all sorts of applications - so they are easy to find or find parts for in the case of a mis-hap.

As for the stock Ford 4wds - I believe they are inside the frame, although it's been a while since I have seen a stock one - so I could be wrong. Most people I know have converted to saginaw...

F-100/150 and bronco are on the outside(3 bolt box). F-250/350 are on the inside(4 bolt box).

Ok so apparently some small minded people dont understand that the truck in this signature is a combination of many sarcasims. Please quit being stupid and study up before you run your mouth about it.

Gee wiz, I didn't mean to get you in a wad ... Sorry!

I have read the entire thread! It was a few weeks ago.

I knew the PO butchered the frame, I knew you were using the Dodge box cause you had it.

I did NOT know it was a tough readily available box and the parts were cheap, and that is what I was after.

Something to ponder, what if you blow a tire at freeway speeds...

-Enjoy

Thinking the Government stimulus plan is working is like thinking that taking water form the deep end of a pool and dumping it in the shallow end will raise the water level of the pool.

you didn't get me "in a wad" I was just too lazy to type the whole thing over again and those were the main reasons. It's MUCH easier to find parts for a saginaw box than older 4wd Ford, and since I had one sitting there...

What if I blow a tire at freeways speeds? I don't know what you are after with this question but here's my answer...

Good ending - I fight the wheel and pull over to the side to put on the spare.

Bad ending - tire blows right at the same time I hit a bad pothole and I stick the front end, cart wheel the truck and send everythin in the bed flying all over the place as I land the truck on it's lid and squish everyone inside

Yup, That made me laugh!

My thoughts were, tire wrapping up in or even bending/breaking the column shaft, thats all.

If you've lost a front tire at speed in Calif. traffic you know what I mean ... It's not fun in any way shape or form!

-Enjoy

I'm guessing the same thing would have happened to the original truck the steering box came in, so no additional danger because of transplant.

If I wanted to do that I could put the other motor out of the 91 dodge that is sitting right next to it now in it. Just not my style.

Once I get the crew back on the road and running I'll look at messing with the hot rod again. Well, that or start the build on the "ranger replacement"

almost forgot - I have a minimal update for today. Nothing special, just I started tearing down the beams so I could cycle the susp.

So the bolt in the back of the driver side leaf was NO WHERE near as bad as the front. In fact the nut came off by HAND (which was scarry to think about) and then the bolt came right out. Tearing the leafs apart was another story, but I got them out. DAMN these things are greasy! People need to quit greasing leaf springs and learn about delrin sliders

I tried looking at pressing the bolt out of the front of that leaf, but it will be a 2 man job. I just can't keep the thing level and in my press by myself

Also - I turned the pitman arm like it will need to be for the d44, and threw an old, mock up type tie rod and a couple heims on the thing to look at steering linkage. The tie rod is a bit long, but you get the idea
