Question 2005 Expedition - Brake Dust

I own a 2008 F250 but also recently bought a 2005 Expy to haul kids around in. When I owned a 2005 F150 I noticed the same thing - that there is an abnormally fast and large build up of brake dues on all wheels (especially the front ones)

Is this osmething unique to the 2005 models since my 2007 Expedition and 2008 F250 do not do this and is there a cure for this? I try to kleep my vehicles CLEAN as I also use them to advertise for my business and this brake dust is horrible.

Since the vehicle is 3-4 years old, it's conceivable that the brakes have been done once already. The pads that were installed could've been the cheapy ones, which would account for the high level of brake dust.

The brake dust problem started with the '03 body style change, and went through '04. I didn't think it was still there is '05, but maybe it was. It was the Motorcraft parts that did this right from the factory. Depending on how much you complained a replacement kit was available early in '04 if I'm not mistaken. Best way to combat it is to switch to low dust ceramic pads when you get a chance. I've had good luck with Raybestos Quiet Stops. Others here have mentioned Hawk pads, but I don't have any personal experience with them.

Ceramic pads all the way! I did my Lincoln three weeks ago and the chrome rims have only a tiny trace of dust!

Raybestos Quiet Stops work great I have also used The Bendix flavor with similar success.

Brake Dust

My 2000 Nav had a big issue on the front wheels---dealer suggested Kleen Wheels:
Kleen Wheels are dust shields which protect your wheels from brake dust

I installed on all four wheels---work great---unfortunately because of the vents when you rotate tires---the shields need to be rotated as well because of the directional vents---after 8 yrs they really could stand painting---but the wheels stay immaculate---and the vents cool the brakes---have had them on 8 yrs with no problem

Hope that gives you another option

good idea - I forgot about those. used a set on a Mercedes back in the late 80's and they worked great.

I always had good luck with Kleen Wheels until I missed the switch on a rotation. Warped the rotors within two weeks. Up until then I had used them on 2 Expys, for around 150k miles without incident.
