1985 f150 300 v6 The truck started smoking from the valve cover,it wasnt running hot.Could it be the catalytic converter, and if so what is the easiest do it yourself replacement.

Sounds like you have a clogged crankcase vent system. This will be a tube running from the valve cover. It will have a positive crankcase ventilation valve on it (a small cylinder shaped thing). Clean out the pipe work and the PCV (or better still replace the PCV) and see if that helps.

I would tell the truck to stop smoking. Seriously though I would look for a leaky valve cover gasket.

Look closer. My Suburban does this every now and then. The valve cover bolts come loose and it drips a tiny bit onto the exhaust pipe and it smokes and smells like heck. I just tighten the bolts back up.
