this resto was done 18 years ago, mostly by myself in garage, inch by inch. use truck year round, but mostly in winter. truck stands 7 foot 6 inches tall, 13 inches ground clearance, and will eat snow over the front fenders!!-------
yes, they connect to an arvin heater over my feet. rheostat switch for fan speed control. on coldest days, it can deliver too much heat. 180 thermostats, 6 blade fan, no overheat problems! truck is all original with exception of 12volt conversion, guages, seat upholstery, and bed i made myself. has only 4000 miles on truck, but who knows how many hours. you need tough kidneys to ride anywhere. lots of springs!
I installed an after market heater box on the passenger side of my '41. I have a boss on the passenger side water pump to deliver hot water to it under pressure, I'm still tinkering trying to decide where to connect the non pressure hose for the return, I think the simpliest thing will be to 'T' at the water neck on one of the heads. I'm not completely comfortable with the nipple cut into a lower radiator hose idea.
i have the nipple on lower hose, driver side, no problems in 18 years! pressure comes from driver side head to heater, then returns to lower hose on driver side. have 2 temp sensors, one for each head, (it is two four cyl engines together, as far as water is concerned), and do not see any difference in temp between sides. don't worry about those nipples, they worked well for the last 67 years!!
A neighbor of mine had a "DIAMOND BELT" () for a while, but choked on the idea of buying two water pumps at a time!!! Pity, it was a sweet 1950 2-door coupe with a lot of collected "OLD TYME" hotrod stuff already on it, just never completed to the "CHERRY" stage. I sometimes wonder if the farm boys around here ever complete anything they play with as a project...
*NOTE: 'Diamond Belt' refers to the way the VEE belt ran from the lower pulley to BOTH cylinder head fronts, where a water pump was mounted in each, to an overhead pulley on the generator of "FLATHEAD" engines. The fan belt was a seperate one.
Later V-8's were a lot more compact in arrangement
Actually, until 1949 the engine fan was bolted to the front of the crankshaft. In 1949, the engine fan was moved higher up on a bracket suspended below the generator, the generator had a double sheave pulley that drove the engine fan AND was driven by the diamond belt from the crank.
an inch of play on belt works real nice! won't tear up generator bearing either. most people expect instant charge when they fire up, and a gen just can't do what an alt will. no instant gratification with these, you have to change mindset and "be" in the era!
hey kids, it seems that last two pages of chat have curtailed the action on this contest. how do we get the rest of the forum to become involved?? I find it hard to believe that, with the caliber of trucks that are out there, that they aren't more involved. any suggestions???---------ps. above post, for those that wish to scrutinize, means 1/2 inch minimal deflection in either direction. gotta cover my butt!
It is forbidden to spread the word by posting about the contests in other forums - I went down that road many times already. Why it should be considered spam I don't really understand.
TWO things we can do are to spread the word with PM's to other folks we know in the different forums, or in my case since I'm the instigator I put a note about it that is an active link to it in my signature.
We're kind of limited here, but yes I'm looking for ways to get the word out. I always have, but it's a puzzle what with the constraints I have to work within.
Best I can figure is chain PM's... If one person tells three others - and they each tell three others, then it spreads like wildfire. 3 - 9 - 27 - 81 - and so on.
I'd like to see the very old truck forums jump in, but I can't be a nuisanse about it.
