54 Cab removal / won't turn loose

Guys, what could I be missing? Okay so I haven't gotten the steering column/wheel removed yet but I should still see some movement, right? The bolts holding the cab to the frame have been removed and other items disconnected. The bed is gone, front clip, motor, etc. Access isn't the problem. The only thing still sitting on the frame is the cab. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Any tips on column removal are welcome as well.

To get my column out I removed the pitman arm from the gear box, unbolted the gear box from the frame. If you take the column cover pan off the floor you can actually pull the whole gearbox thru the hole.

There is only four bolts holding the cab on. Two on each door post (front) and the two at the rear of the cab. You can take the plug out and remove the bolts from the cab or take the bolts out of the frame. Don't forget the emergency brake cable. I assume you don't have a trans still in it either with the motor out. Other wise it could be the shifter.
Also it is heaavyyy so don't be surprised at how hard it is to lift.

Those two bolts in the back that Max mentioned are just outboard of where the cab is cut out to clear the frame on either side. See the second illustration below.

Also, don't forget the fuel tank neck. Those rubber pieces can get mighty solid after over fifty years.
Good Luck,

I pulled my steering column out the same way. Disconnected pitman arm, unbolted and brought it up through the cab. 4 bolts hold the cab down. It IS a lot lighter without the doors.

Disconnecting the pitman arm sounds like the way to go. I'll take out the column cover pan and remove as a unit. With this process I should not have to remove the steering wheel, correct? Any special tool I need to remove the pitman arm?

Nope, no special equipment. Don't need to remove the steering wheel, and the pitman arm comes off when you remove one nut/bolt.

I spent the better half of a day trying to remove the steering wheel that came off some other truck and forced on by the previous owner. I gave up and pulled the box out through the floor board. Took less then 20 mins.

I'm almost there! Disconnected at the Pitman arm and have the column cover pan loose. It's ready to pull out through the cab...except for getting the column cover pan over the clutch and brake pedal. How does the foot pad come loose from the bracket or does it? Some of the diagrams I have seen in the catalogs look like it comes apart there but i certainly don't want to force it if I'm not sure. Sorry for asking something that must be pretty basic but I don't want to try and take something apart where it wasn't meant to come apart. Didn't see anything in the service manual that was helpful. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

They are threaded on just turn them to the left to loosen. I have seen some with a back nut on them just feel under the center of the pedal and you will either have a threaded bolt or nut and the bolt is built into the pedal. If there is a nut you will have to take it off first.

Thanks Max for the quick turnaround. There isn't anything on the back that I could see or feel so I think they are just threaded as you suggest. It will be tomorrow afternoon before I get back to it but I think you have solved my issue. Thanks again.

The steering column is out. It took a little patience but I was finally able to snake it through the column cover hole. The pedals came off just as you suggested. The cab still seems to be attached somehow but I haven't gotten real aggressive with it yet.

The gas tank was removed a while back and the fuel filler neck as well. The running board on the passenger side has not been removed but I don't see anything attaching it to the cab. It could be just the weight of the cab. It still has all the glass in it and both doors attached. I can lift the back of the cab slightly so it is loose. The front is the question. The motor is out so I can stand in front of the crossmember and get good access. I may try to take a block of wood and the floor jack and see if I can lift it off the front just enough to know it is loose. I don't want to bend or warp anything but think I can be careful enough to see if it pops free. If so it is just a matter of getting some help to set the cab off.
