This is true. Batteries connected in series are what makes two 6 volters become twelve. Connecting them in parallel makes the amperes add together. To use four six volt batteries to create a twelve volt high ampere system connect two pairs of series linked six volters with the additional wires shown in darker blue below here -
Note the lines that I have erased! Also keep in mind that you need a lot thicker guage of wire to carry that voltage AND current capacity...

Ive seen several bigger boats(yachts,to be exact!) that used that same system with 4 large 6Volt batteries,and recently i was at a home that was "off the grid" and had a generator,solar panels,and a wind generator,and it also utilized 4 6Volt batteries for storage..... Apparently it is considered one of the best options.
