My '86 has the round "bullet" style glow plugs too. The style must have changed sometime that year as the Ford dealer gave me the right plugs and Autozone got me the spade style.
You can check the plugs in the motor or out of it with an OHM meter.
You can also CAREFULLY check them on a battery by grounding the body and puttig power to the connector area. They will get HOT so watch out.
