Sounds like the problems I encountered. I couldn't slide the box far enough towards the fender to get the holes to line up. For the $$$ they cost, I just sent it back.
That cylinder, if it's a huge honkin' thing, is part of the evaporative emissions stuff.

ok finished the install. Sounds good at idle ...tomorrow I'll drive it around to reset the computer.....Art you asked for pictures of the plate....I can't count right, it was 5 bolts holding the plate on to the fender. how do I up load a picture?
Antelope V-10 I had the same problem with sliding it towards the fender....thats when the saw came out and cut just enough off of that plate for it to slide into place....SNUG with very little room to spare.
You can see that I've cut the plate kindof in the middle of the picture. That wasn't enough, so I had to cut about a 1/2" more to the right of the 2 bolts in ther middle of the picture on the left of that cylinder. The only thing holding the cylinder's plate now are the 2 bolts to the far right on the fender.
I wonder what the '01 (or pre-04?) plate would cost from Ford directly? Might be a good thing to figure out what is needed to do this job and report it back to Volant.

I called Volant and the tech said they have ran into this problem. He said they had to modify and make something to make it work. That's when I boxed it back up and sent it back to the vendor. Kudos for sticking it out and making it work for you.
I drove teh truck to work this morning. First impression is ....it's ok, and then started to notice the quicker response. But the real test will be the towing. Everything about my truck revolves around towing.
I did make a couple of modifications to the air intake. I cut 2 holes in the panel right next to the radiator and 1 behind the honeycomb next to the head light. I might cut more later. I got the idea from Stans modifications on his truck. We'll see how this does for getting more air into the box.
I cut holes there also about the same size. I was getting water on the filter when driving in rain so be careful. I bought a filter wrap and made a neoprene divider so water couldn't get on the filter. The filter wrap helps to repel water and keep bugs and crap out of the filter pleats which makes it easier to clean.

Thats a great idea about the neoprene divider. We're in the high desert so not much rain in the summmer time but snow in the winter, but I did want to address that issue about water getting in the filter.
Just got back from a a real test drive and I'm happy with the difference in the filter set-ups. I might just be psycological ($230) but the truck seems to shift better and the responce to the foot is quicker.
Here's the finished product, it looks better than the original!!!!
Did the Volant kit come with a dry style or oiled filter?
here's the product info....
Volant PowerCore Filter: 99.99% efficient at removing dirt. Better than any other filter on the market. Yet it still flows more air than paper and doesn't need oiling like a cotton/gauze filter. The fluted design and nano-fiber technology used in the PowerCore, makes it maintenance free and lasts 100,000 miles before you need to replace it.
I definitly see an increase in performance and the sound with just a stock exhuast set-up is great.
And you can get the extra "sock" for it - I have one, but haven't put it on yet...
