Article is back up, IE issues resolved. Sorry for the delay. I removed all references to the IE issues to clean up this thread.

Report:

After my usual Labor Day trip into Upstate NY of around 500 miles round-trip, with about 1500lbs in the bed, I can definitely say it pulled the hills easier than last time.

First it was the headers, that helped in the upper RPM range. Then I changed the Y-pipe out for the eBay y-pipe, which helped low-end throttle response and was able to pull those hills a little better.

Now, with the Volant CAI, I notice even more torque pulling those same hills at around 2000RPM. Coincidentally or not, I notice the intake sound is a bit louder at those same hills.

Definitely a decent upgrade in my opinion.

I only got 15MPGs this trip, but I wasn't easy on it, and I was testing the intake in terms of acceleration and pulling hills. I also averaged 80MPH on the long highway stretches which is definitely not a good thing in terms of mileage. I will be making another trip in a month or so, and will try to take it easy and see what I can get MPG wise.

Definitely like the quality of the kit, the instructions, the sound, AND the increase in power. I do have the shorty eBay headers and the eBay y-pipe, and figured the Volant kit would at least do SOMETHING. [/quote]

I'm definetly going to get the Volant.

Art, how do those ebay headers install and sound? I've been toying with the idea of getting them for mine.

They didn't change the stock sound much, a little more wah-wah-wah at idle, but otherwise pretty much the same - still have the stock muffler and cat, but changed out the y-pipe for the eBay y-pipe. With both the headers and the y-pipe, there was a mild difference in low-end throttle response and high-end power.

That is a very nice kit for shure. Looks a lot like the K&N with a box instead of a divider like with the K&N kit. I really like that the Volant mounts the MAFS/Connector off to the side of the tube. On my K&N kit the connector is underneath the tube and makes it harder to get at the screws and the connector. Great article.

Thanks, I've already gotten the ebay Y. Also I noticed the website for Volant didn't list 2004's it only listed 99-03, aren't those engines all basically the same? I'm going to send them an email or call the 800 #.

Did you install the headers yourself?

Yeah, there's a thread I started about the header install - prepare to waste an hour reading it

I really like the setup - it pulls air from the front through the radiator support, but also from the fender area - which isn't all that cool, but ... does allow a heck of a lot of air to get into the box. It sounds cool, that's for sure

And the entire intake tube is swapped out, getting rid of the right-angle bend right after the air box, where the output of the MAF is much smaller than the tube, causing the air charge to slow down and slam into the back of the tube.

I'm thinking of getting an SCT X3 now... we'll see what Xmas has in store for me

Just heard back from Volant. The CAI system has not yet been fitted on to 2004's yet.

FWIW my dad has an 03' CC I have an 04' SC and we both have the same part # K&N intakes on our trucks. Krewats truck is exactly like my 04' and I'm willing to bet that Volant would fit no problem.

I went ahead and bought the Volant CAI yesterday. I'm looking forward to insatalling it and seeing how the thing performs.

Started to switch it out yesterday afternoon. I followed Arts instructions along with the sheet they sent with the Volant CAI. I ran into a couple of problems that I didn't expect.

1. the MAF unit's hole didn't line up with the hole they predrilled on the box and the bolt holes weren't lined up exactly. Which kind of surprised me, but I made it work and will see if there are any problems when I run the truck. I might still need to grind down some of the hole. I didn't expect the MAF, box and the interior flange to not line up. We'll see how it performs.

2. there's a cylinder and the air box are placed on which isn't like Arts 2001. There are 6 bolts holding the platform to the truck. I had to cut off the part holding the old air filter to fit the new box into place.

At this time the wife was nagging me and it was getting to dark
to see good, so I put everything away. At this point I only need to connect the box and start it up. THat will come after work.

We'll report on its performance.... I cant wait as I'm driving the back up car..

1) I ran into the same thing - matter of fact, I radiused the entrance to the MAF housing, because it would help the air flow. It seemed the holes in the box were slightly off, but I did get it all lined up correctly.

2) Now we know what's different with the 2004 - do you have any pictures? If I could get a pic, I could maybe add it to the tech article as a caveat.

I'll download the pictures tonight which will better explain the single plate that holds both the old air box and the cylinder (not sure what it is).
