Welcome to the forum ScoobyDoozer. Like 84 said, it's most likely the glow plug relay. It's the relay just behind the alt. Looks like an old ford starter relay....kinda. If you can hear it click on and off, then it's probably the glow plugs. You can ohm them out pretty easy. If you pull the clips (injector and glow plug harness') from the valve cover gasket and ohm the pins. In each connector is 5 pins. The outer 2 are glow plugs in each connector. The center pin is a ground, and the two on each side of it are injectors. Anyway, you can ohm those outer pins and if you see anything over about 4 ohms they are bad. They are pretty easy to install, they just take time. And if that's the problem, we'll walk you through that too.
As far as the smoke, that's raw fuel. When the motor is not up to temp and having a hard time burning fuel, it will send it out white. So don't worry about that. That just tells us it's not a fuel problem. Hope that helps and let us know what you find. We'll be here to help, and again, Welcome to the forum.
