1990 302CI 161,000mi AOD Transmission not smooth

I'm going to start with changing the transmission filter and cleaning out the pan. The truck has an unsmooth take off from a stop. Now I'm not stomping on the gas it's just a normal take off that is not as smooth as I would like.

Does this transmission need to be rebuilt? it has 161,000 miles on it.

what do you mean by unsmooth? is it a shudder? a clunk sound???

doing a service on the tranny is a good idea regardless but i wouldnt point at the tranny being the problem just yet. could be motor/tranny mounts are shot, bad ujoints on rear driveshaft etc...

Yeah.. could be anything from a worn output shaft on the tranny, to bad U-joints in the driveshaft, to bad engine or tranny mounts, to worn/broken leaf springs or hangers, to a bad torque converter, to something inside the tranny.

It's a shudder.

Using the gear shift, it doesn't happen in 1st gear, happens in 2nd and overdrive.

I think that it's related to the filter being clogged or low on fluid in the pan.

The AOD has an inner shaft that is the 3:OD shift. The torque converter needs to have both inner and outer shafts seated in it correctly. If the inner shaft goes, you shift into open gear after 2. BTDT. The shudder sounds like a Torque converter problem. Did you drain the converter as well?

I had the exact same thing happen to my 91 , it was not the transmission it was the first set of ujoints on the rear driveshaft ,the mounting flange bolts that hold the drive shaft to the out put shaft of the trans were loose. Got them tightened and the vibration/shutter went away.Check the rear drive shaft assembly from the trans to the axle first to make sure the shaft assembly is not the problem before you do anything else. Post back and let us know what you find.

I've dropped the transmission pan. It had a cheapo WIX gasket on it, so I assumed that the filter was a WIX also, The fluid in the pan looked good, so I cleaned the pan and put it back on with some red RTV that I had laying around.

There was too much fluid in the pan. I corrected the amount when I refilled the pan. Now I'm seeing a much better take off. I start off in D now instead of Overdrive. Don't shift into Overdrive until I'm up to speed 55 mph or better.

Now the transmission doesn't leak and it's better going from a stop.

Could the extra fluid have been causing the trouble due to air bubbles being created?

Mustang6147 is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Over filled transmission arent good, keep in mind it should have a breather. My son had 4 qts to much in his tranny, then asked when we could rebouild it, since he had a leak. he assumed it was his front seal. It wasnt. It was the breather... I pulled the plug ( pan installed) and drained it back down, and all is fine. He pulled his truck, and drove it for a while over filled, with no adverse effects... His isnt an AOD, but is in a F250 SD with a 7.3 PSD.

My gut feeling if, Your downshift cable needs adjusting. Sometimes the cable stretches, but if it comes off, it will feel like a high stall Tq Converter, or starting off in 3rd gear.
