1956 Vin Help
Hello all,
I have decoded my vin using the fantastic vin decoder from this site. t/y all.
However I still have a problem. I purchased my 56 in pieces, stored the truck for a few years, and some A hole STOLE my vin data plate!!!! This forced me to find the vin on the frame rail, easy as pie. My problem is that my 56 has a 4spd transmission and a 3spd steering column!!(I believe! two arms on bottom of column!!) What is the original parts??? was this truck converted to 4 speed? If it was they used all the correct parts(as far as I can tell). Is their any way to decifer the unique part of my vin to tell this information??

No, sorry there isn't. The TRANS code is on the Rating Plate.

Ford punched out all the holes in the sheet metal, so if there are any holes that were drilled out, that's one way to tell what transmission it had originally.
25442 is the numerical sequence of assembly from the...uh...Mahwah NJ Assembly Plant.
Your truck was assembled in Mahway NJ, not Edgewater.
Edgewater was closed at the end of the 1955 model run.
Mahwah began assembling Ford cars & trucks at the beginning of the 1956 model run.
Info source: 1948/56 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Rating Plate Decode Chart / Assembly Plant Codes / Page XI.
EG: Edgewater = 1948/52 / E: Edgewater = 1953/55 / E: Mahwah = 1956.

DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!! lol
Ok so... their is no way other than the vin tag that was stolen, to tell if my truck was a factory 4 speed.
says under breath, so I could order a new vin tag and tell them it was 4 speed and no one (except maybe an expert could tell the difference). That is after I change my column to a floor shift one.
Very interesting.
