1965 F100 Steering Wheel Question

Hey everybody -

I am trying to figure out options for replacing the steering wheel (with horn ring) of my truck (in my gallery you can see the replaced steering wheel - the horn doesn't work).

Questions:

1. Any idea where I can find a '65 steering wheel with working horn ring?
2. If I can find it, is it difficult to put in, including getting the horn to work? (Note: I ain't no mechanic).
3. I own a '68 F-100 with a good steering wheel, though it is 100 miles away. Would that work? Did it have the ring?

Thanks!

John

Peeps replace the original steering wheel for one major reason.

The cab is tight with scant legroom, the 3 spoke steering wheel is oversize (17" in diameter) by today's standards, so depending on your size, the wheel may rub on your thighs or stomach.

The 3 spoke steering wheel is the same for all 1961/66 F100/250's with 2WD.

1967/70 F100/350's w/ or w/o 4WD.

Also fits 1966/73 Bronco & 1960/63 Falcon (same horn ring-excepting the center emblem).

Custom Cabs came with horn rings, Standard Cabs came with horn buttons.

Dennis Carpenter has reproduced the black steering wheel, the horn ring has also been reproduced, but is sold with separate pieces.

Because of the wide range of models these wheels and horn rings fit, used ones are not that hard to find in decent condition.

Note: The 1961/66 F100/250's w/4WD's and F350's have a 4 spoke wheel that 18" in diameter.

btw: Because of my size (6-5, 335), age (64 in a matter of days), arthritis and back problems, just sitting in my '65 F100 is a pain in the backside (no pun intended).

I cannot not drive it anymore. However, it is not for sale, unless someone wants to pony up 25 big ones. Even then, I'd prolly say no, because I bought it new....so it's like a member of the family.

You need a puller to remove the wheel. Turn the horn ring about a quarter turn to the left and it should pop off. There are two springs inside, one large one you can't miss and a small one at the bottom (if it's centered) that is easy to lose. There are two threaded holes in the steering wheel for bolts with your puller after removing the center nut. The horn ring retainer is plastic and it's not uncommon for them to break at least one tab off. I'd buy a new one (they are cheap) and probably replace the turn signal cam while you're in there if it's yellow and getting hard (plastic, will break like the horn ring retainer).

I would buy a new steering wheel and have painted to match. Maybe Bill is finding more used ones on his coast, but here we do not see any used wheels that haven't already developed cracks.

BTW, the above applies to the original wheel only. If you have an aftermarket wheel they all attach differently.
