I've found Ford used different starters for different years. The starter on the six in my F-2 went out a couple of years ago, the fields burned up. I went down in back to a parts truck and pulled the starter but something wouldn't fit so I ended up pulling the guts from the parts starter and installing them into the old starter and it worked. I don't remember exactly what was different, I just remember having to switch parts.
As for six cylinder starter versus eight, I am pretty sure they are the same. Just a little difference between the years.
Also, remember that the two bolts holding the starter to the bellhousing are also holding the starter together so if you're not careful the starter will full apart when you take it out. It's a lot of fun trying to put it back together although it's not that hard if you pull the brush springs out of the case, along with the brushes, and hang the on the side of the case. After installing the armature install the brushes, then the springs.
