I have an 05 X with a 4" turbo back Magna Flow exhaust. Since this has been put on my truck is not fun to drive. There is a horrible drone from 1500 to 2000 rpm. It was not there before the new exhaust.
I'm thinking of going back to the stock exhaust if I can find one.
I had a similar problem with my F150 after installing a Flowmaster super 44 and 3.5" tail pipe. I found that by moving the muffler further forward in the system near the center of the truck the drone completely disappeared but it still had lots of bark when you're standing on it.
You could also add sound dampening materials. Thick undercoating or butyl/asphalt under the carpet would change the frequency the sheet metal resonates at. Once you slow the metal, the drone will dissipate.
I was under the truck this weekend and noticed a couple of places that could use some insulation. There is bare metal floor boards right over the exhaust in a couple of places. So I will look into the sound proof idea also.
Pull the rear seats and carpet to soundproof. Don't put it on the outside....if that's what you were thinking.
I soundproofed my Excursion and it made a nice difference. However, the biggest difference was when I removed the Banks muffler and went with a Walker Quiet-Flow III.
No, I took off the Cat when I put in the 4" turbo back. That is one of the reasons I'm looking at a resonator. That is roughly some of what a CAT does.
Ok two ideas try flipping the muffler around it see if that will work and this may just be a dump Idea but try straight piping it, it worked well for my 01 X with the 7.3 horrible drone with the muffler on but off it sounded better and no drone go figure? But all this only applies if you have a diesel witch I assume you do.
