engine oil recommendations
OK,relatively new to this game so excuse my ignorance, but I wanna do right by my truck 'cause I love her!
I have a 351w with big cam & roller rockers from a 69 Torino in my '54.Daily driver,& she gets driven hard 'cause she's fast 'n'fun
Currently running on Mobil 1(last 8k ,no problems so far)as the mustang guys seem to like it.Is this kool,& if not why,& what grade/make would be best.Living here in England, choice is limited, but I don't mind importing if the benefits justify the cost.
Opinions please
Thanks.

Howdy,
If you have flat tappets it's a good idea to use any diesel rated oil because of the additional
ZDDP anti-wear additives present in diesel oils.
Those additives are slowly being removed in the newer oils because they interfere with catalytic
converters. Most newer engines have roller followers anyway so it's not a big deal....(for them!)
Unfortunately for us with flat tappets the reduced/removed ZDDP (unless they're replacing it with something else), we'll either need to find the actual additive or an oil that still has it so we don't wear out our camshafts prematurely.
There's probably a way to find out if Mobil 1 or other oil has sufficient anti-wear additives for our old engines. This subject has been literally beat to death here and on just about every other automotive, marine, motorcycle etc. board on the internet.
There are snake oil salesmen who claim that their version of snake oil either replaces the zddp or is as good or better than the "real" stuff.
I am always suspicious of any snake oil....as they usually only increase profits for the people that sell them....
I suspect that as little as most of us drive our Y-block engines we could put Wally World Oil in them and as long as it's changed regularly the engines would outlast US!!!
Your mileage may vary,
Cheers,
Rick

Randy,
I think he said roller ROCKERS. does that mean that it has roller lifters too?
I know roller rockers are pretty good to have but I would want roller lifters to protect the cam
in any case absolutely right. Roller rockers AND roller followers mean no problems with reduced zddp!!
Cheers Y'all

I have a Flat tappet motor and found a link on here with some good motor oil info. I Ended running Castrol GTX 20W 50 for High Mileage engines. Basically according to an oil chart it seemed to be appropriate for Flat tappet engines and doe'snt have detergants or oil seal and gasket preservatives, so Ultimately was the overall best choice for my engine which has 10K miles and was rebuilt 7 years ago. Also like that it stays clean after oil change!
