Wood bed

I found it easier just to ask the pros on here, on the '60 what kind of wood was the bed made out of? Just a curious question.

Luddle,

you won't find heart pine at Home Depot... you're going to have to scrounge around old salvage yards that handle building materials from old demo jobs... find you a couple of 12x12 timbers ( or 1 long one)You'll need more than a beds worth to get clear lumber that isn't split from age. Now mortgage the house to buy it.... then load it up in your station wagon and take it to a mill to have it rough cut into approx size... then they (or some mill work shop) can plane it down to correct dimension, rabit the grooves and hand you another bill..... then the real fun begins...finishing it...

heart pine is beautiful.... oak is cheaper and readily available from lots of vendors...

later

Heart pine is available at a mill in Wilmington NC. I think the site is Cape Fear pine or something. They dive in the Cape Fear River and pull these old sunk logs out and clean them up. Like mentioned before, oak is easier to find and most likely cheaper.
Good luck
