Yep, I was out last thursday.
Effective October 1, 2008 at El Mirage.
$15 for a one day permit, valid from dawn to dusk
$30 for a weekly permit, valid for 7 days
$90 for an annual permit, valid from October 1, 2008 - September 30, 2009
BLM started collecting fees at Dumont a couple years back, now El Mirage, and I am sure places like Rasor Road and Johnson Valley will follow suit as well. And now there is talk about closing Dumont Dunes much the same way the Kelso Dunes were closed back in the 70s.
It's a shame the government has to be so involved. I mean, did El Mirage really need a visitors center?

Ahhh, El Mirage!
I recall when they banned shooting shotguns stating it was hazardous to the Ultra-Light aircraft that were sometimes flown out there. Nobody ever got shot, injured, or even shot AT, but it was an excuse. I believe they banned all shooting now.
Look for more fees as the State tries to find revenue for their spending habits.
It's amazing how this state has grown in population and the access shrinks in tandem.

Unfortunatley, I can see them shutting it down.
They closed 32,000+ acres down at Glamis back in 1994, and now the US Fish and Wildlife Service along with the Center for Biological Diversity are pushing HARD to get Dumont closed because of the fringe toed lizard, which is exclusive to the area. And I thought the 3.6 million acres alone in the Southern California desert would be enough for the government to designate as 'wilderness.'
The BLM collects just over $1 million annually at Dumont alone, but it all goes back into to Dumont, mostly on law enforcement and medical response. So in other words, no one benefits from the fees, except the users.
And in the case of El Mirage, we have a beautiful, state-of-the-art visitors center.
Hers is what I want to know: Where does the green sticker money go now that we have to pay additional fees at each riding spot?

Green strickers are for 4-strokes, Red stickers are for 2-strokes. 2-strokes are 'gross polluters' in Enviro-Wacko speak.
