Automatic transmission swap question

Automatic transmission swap question
Hi all,
I need some help with my "pre-classics"
I have a 90 Ranger 4.0L automatic transmission 4wd that has a bunch of miles on it (240,000). Recently it developed a significant transmission leak, though the transmission shows no shifting problems or slippage.
I have found another transmission from a 92 2wd Ranger 4.0L engine and would like to install it as a replacement. Will that fit?
I purchased the ASTG manual and between that and my Google research it appears that the same transmissioin was used from 90 to 94. The FORD repair book for a 95 Ranger talks about the the different transfer cases that were used including the empty one used on 2 wd vehicles. I know that the oil pan on the transmissions are different between the 2wd and 4wd vehicles to allow for operation at extreme angles in the 4wd version. I figured I could just swap the pans and filter around.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
OldIronNut

The only problem I see is that you will lose the 4x4. You will also need the 2x4 drive shaft to make the swap.
The output shafts in the transmission are different and you have to dissemble the unit to change it.
It would be better to just reseal the original unit if it is working fine.
You can swap pans and filters around to whatever you want.
Put a rear main engine oil seal in when you have the trans out.

Thanks jk080 for the comments.
I discovered some other information regarding the "empty" transfer case spacer arrangement. Apparently that was used only on 2wd Bronco IIs so the A4LD out of a 2 wd Ranger is not going to work in my 4 wd rig. The 2wd automatics have a different output shaft and tail piece. You can swap things around but you basically have to open up the transmission which if I do that I am going to rebuild it.
Thanks again.
